New Egghead here!!
Hey gentleman (and ladies),
I got my MBGE on July 4th and haven't gotten to use it yet. However, I've been on here since Monday looking around and already bookmarking some posts to go back and check out. Already learning quite a bit as well. Everyone seems extremely helpful and friendly as well which is exactly what I had heard about this forum before coming here. I just wanted to drop in and say hello and looking forward to growing this addiction with all of y'all.

Got ya covered!! Here's the beauty sitting in the mancave/storage from moving room since it hasn't even made it outside yet. We just moved into our first house so I have a feeling the wife will want those kitchen cabinet doors setting beside it finished before I start on the table

Btw, is the Royal Oak lump charcoal a good one to start with? Or, do y'all prefer a different brand?
Background to this... A buddy won this egg in a contest and didn't need it so he gave it to me. (Yes, one heck of a good friend) So... I still haven't even ventured to find a local dealer to see what they carry for the BGE. Hence, the questions...

Welcome aboard.....nothing wrong with RO...but it also depends on where you're located and what else is available....and what you want to pay. Here's a fun site with lots of info and ratings on charcoal

Welcome. Congrats on the egg and house! Royal Oak is descent. It's better than some other stuff available. (If you head to the dealer for lump more than likely they will carry Big Green Egg brand. This is Royal Oak but bagged under Big Green Egg. It's the same stuff you're using but more expensive since the bag says BGE on it) Also when using Royal Oak make sure you don't put any food on the egg until you get a nice clear smoke coming from it. If you put your food on too early you will get an unpleasant smoke taste in your food. With better lump you don't need to wait for the heavy white smoke to burn off and the lump has a more of a neutral taste to it. Royal Oak is more than good starting out. Have fun and ask with any questions. Always someone here to help"The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

I certainly appreciate that. I see you're from Peachtree, GA. Know any good local spots between Birmingham, AL and Talking Rock, GA (Jasper and Elijay area) that I need to check out? I'm over in that area via Hwy 11 to Rome and then up to go to my father in laws place pretty regularly. Figured I'd start looking into any good local placesMBGE, Blackstone Tailgater Grill/Griddle Combo

Moose. Sometimes just "quoting" the person will not notify them that you quoted them and they may not return to the thread. use the @ symbol like i did with you to "summon" them. This should send a notification that you asked them a question. @GATraveller

Joe's BBQ in Blue Ridge is supposed to be some of the best in the state but I've never had it myself so I can't give you a first hand recommendation......heard a lot of good things tho_Moose_ said:GATraveller said:Good for you......this will change your life....REALLY. Congrats and welcome.

@kl8ton awesome, thanks! @GATraveller I'll be checking that out next time I'm over. He lives right there by the Blue Ridge mountains so I can't think it's too far away. Plus, what's a few extra minutes in the truck for some good food when I'm already driving 4 hours over there anyway...

Joes is ok, nothing truly special. Joe seemed nice enough but almost immediately was downplaying the whole deal. Blue Ridge is a fun spot for a few hours, can't say I'd make the trip just for Joes. FWIWGATraveller said:

Welcome to the cult as some of our other-halves** call it. Although they LOVE it when we put smoke to food***.
**other-halves vs. better-halves as some are not necessarily male doing the Egging.
***food vs. just meat as we cook almost anything on the Egg. -

Welcome aboard. I don't use it any longer, but Royal Oak is a great lump to start with. I don't use it any more, but it's nice to have a baseline for when you try other varieties. You can find better, but it's probably the best bang for your buck lump that I've used.Stillwater, MN

@_Moose_, I have a Medium and a Large, and the Medium is what I use by far the most. It's a great size for most things I do. Once in a while I'm glad to have a large, and once in a while I fire up both at once, but I'm serious: I LOVE my Medium BGE. Most of the time it's just perfect. Have a ball!
