Smokeware Cap

How are these compared to the daisy wheel?  Are they that much better?  Probably a little more convenient.  Just wondering if they function as a temp regulator better than the wheel

I bought the Smokeware Cap when I bought my Large Egg.  I love it.  Simple to adjust, keeps the rain out and looks better then the daisy wheel. But then I have no experience with adjusting the daisy wheel.

I don't think they do a better job on temp regulation, but do as well.  The reasons I bought one for my Eggs (Medium and Large) were that they protect better from rain (I always worried about rain dripping into the Egg via the daisy wheel), and my daisy wheels kept rusting, which these never do.  I really like mine.  Once you get the hang of the daisy wheel, and know how to rotate them so they don't change when you open the lid, they're really just as easy as the Smokeware caps.  I don't find that a difference.  For me, it's rain and not rusting.

you are just sliding it to the amount of air flow needed similar to the bottom vent.  Easier then I thought with the daisy wheel and its many adjustments.  I find it easy, simple to control the temp.

I'm a big fan and if nothing else they look cool!

  • +1 for the Smokeware cap. Same heat regulation but don't need to mess with adjusting after opening/closing the egg. If you are a clean freak you'll want to clean it occasionally where the other one you didn't have to. But if you get rain in my opinion it's a no-brainier.

and for sake of argument to those who say it doesn't snuff the fire as well you can buy the snuff plate proto-typed for SmokeWare by our very own @Jeepster47

I really felt the need for a smokeware cap when I came out to light my egg one fine sunny day and there was a big gnarly birdshit all over the daisy wheel. This bird must've been pretty big.

I thought of what would be on my cook if the wheel was open at the time.

    Lightning strikes, right?

Do what you like. If I cooked in the open I would probably get one but I cook on a covered patio. I have no problem with the daisy wheel and I think it looks better on the egg. The smokeware cap looks tacky to me but that's just my opinion.

Word on the street is, BGE is updating the DFMT and bands.....bout friggin time.

I went ahead anyways, and added a third cap for my small with adapter.  It is goofy on the smaller egg, but works great as a rainguard when tailgating, and eggin on the patio for the bigger ones.

It was a good feeling retiring the stupid DFMT and ceramic cap each time.  Never goin back.

No top for me unless needed (under 300 degrees) Just makes extra work with vent settings. The reason why I've passed on any custom top since the daisy wheel only sees low and slows

I use the smokeware cap when going low and slow and there might be a storm cropping up or if it is raining. I also still use the daisy wheel and ceramic top.

Probably fielded well over a dozen questions from puzzled eggers when we were running without it in Sterling over the weekend.

Worth it if out in the open with rain or snow.

" Just wondering if they function as a temp regulator better than the wheel".  No.   I got mine primarily to deal with heavy rain storms.

@Focker Excited to hear about the bands...  Any specifics on what will be different or a potential timeline?

He didn't give a timeline, but mentioned a grooved type of fit for both bands.  The "tighten until the bolts bend", seems to be a difficult concept for peeps to understand.

If this rings true, both dome and base will get a minor facelift as well.

I pulled my smokeware cap to clean it, but that hasn't happened yet, so I went back to tbe daisy wheel for the past few days.  Felt like I was going back to the stone ages.

The cap looks cool, protects from rain, and holds your settings.  Best 35 dollar add on in my opinion.
