Nothing against SmokeWare, but if you are leaning toward Tel-Tru I'd buy the 200 to 1,000º one directly from Tel-Tru. That one you are considering tops out at 500º meaning if he goes much over he risks warping it. Here's the link.

Don't get the Firecraft one. Description says... "- 1/2in NPT (install into 7/8in drill hole)". That's not suitable for an egg. Also, that model cannot be calibrated.

I have been happy with my 200-1000° TelTru. Bought it direct from TT before BGE started using them. $22.55

I've read of a couple of guys on here who seem to like the Smokeware. No experience with it myself.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I prefer the Smokeware 3" blackface.  Easy to read, no issues with out of cal, and great customer service.

@Jeepster47 gave me one to try, now I have them on all of my eggs.  I wrapped the thermo on a clean burn and it stayed in cal.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

  • I just bought a 3" black one from Smokeware.  They're easier to read after enjoying some adult beverages.

A 500º max is a bit limiting for egg use.  The 1000º Teltru is fine if you will be doing high heat pizzas, but it hard to read at lower temps (min of 200º) - marks are real close together.

Make sure it can be calibrated.

    Waterproof/resistant is good.

Bigger dial face is nice for those of us with older eyesight.

I have "older eyesight" :), but have no problem with the smaller dial. Just rotate the thing so the target temp is at 12 o'clock. At a glance, even from quite a distance, you can tell if you are on target.

My one year old Smokeware crapped out after running it too hot. It's in the trash and I surely won't be buying another. I've had no issues when I wrapped the Tel Tru.

You must have hit the lemon lotto with Tel-Tru as I have used 3 of them for 12 years now with not a single issue.

I hit the lemon lottery 3 times with Tel-Tru then.  All three fogged and had to rezero multiple times.

With the demo Smokeware I had I wrapped during clean burn, then pulled and immediately put it in the snow.  Not recommended, but it has kept chugging along.  No rezero or anything.

Metal edge to edge yes it is 3" but the exposed glass face is the 2.5 I measured quickly, but I see now it is more like 2 9/16. What 1/16" of an inch difference amongst us non-engineer type is no great shakes. =)
