i am new to the egg and excited to start cooking on it. Only problem I'm having is that the lid won't stay open. Any suggestions?

Hinge or bands possibly on upside down? Or spring missing ?Large BGE, MiniMAX BGE, 2 Mini BGE's, R&V Fryer, 36" Blackstone Griddle, Camp Chef Dual Burner 40K BTU StoveBGE ChimineaProsper, TX

If you take a picture it might help diagnose the problem. I suspect hotch is right.Edmonton, Alberta - XL & Minimax

Both springs are attached and the tension bolts are on the left rear, looking at it from the front. The flat piece of the hinge assembly is up.
Can't take ate a pic right now because on the road.
I wanted an egg after eating ribs cooked by our friend on his XL.
Happy I found this forum!

What size BGE do you have?Large BGE, MiniMAX BGE, 2 Mini BGE's, R&V Fryer, 36" Blackstone Griddle, Camp Chef Dual Burner 40K BTU StoveBGE ChimineaProsper, TX

When open does the profile look like this? If not then your band is up side down.

The photo was of his friends which motivated him to buy a large. At least thats how I've read it.Edmonton, Alberta - XL & Minimax

Not being a smart *ss here but that HAS to win the picture for the most gross dome and base edges picture ever posted here! Those aren't gaskets which went bad - that is a dome and base that have seldom met plus more sauce has been applied to those edges than the meat pictured! I really wondered if this post wasn't the work of a troll laughing his butt off at us!JNDATHP said:

Are the springs connected to the bottom bolts closest to the egg or the ones at the back like in this photo ? If they are connected like in this photo the top will not stay open properly

-
I have a large and the picture is my friend's XL. And no, I'm not a troll laughing. I'm trying to learn.Michael

Bill, I will look when I get home. I seem to recall they are positioned like they are in your photo.Michael

OK - then I'll take you word, but may I suggest that you never let your dome and base edges get as gross as those pictured! Those are just not right!JNDATHP said:I have a large and the picture is my friend's XL. And no, I'm not a troll laughing. I'm trying to learn.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -
Just curious, why does it matter how gross the dome and base edge are? We don't cook on there.RRP said:

Is you egg on a level surface front to back? If it slopes downhill toward the front just a bit, the dome will not stay open. Don't ask me how I know.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Carolina, it is on a level surface in a nest. I think Bill hit it on the head - I recall that the bottom of the springs are attached to the outward bolts. It makes sense if they are attached to the bolts closest to the base because there would be more tension.Michael

That's fine is you like that look which is the first thing most people see. Guess I have taught classes too long where if newbies saw some of the gross pictures on a BGE itself, and an encrusted PS or a really gross grate they would never discover the GREATNESS of cooking with a BGE. I personally am turned off by a picture like this guy posted. But if it's fine with you, your spouse and your company then so be it. OK? No offense - OK?DMW said:

No offense taken, I keep my plate setter clean with drip trays and clean my cooking grids after almost every cook. I just didn't see the concern on the dome/base edges.RRP said:

I posted the picture because this is the first egg I saw and I loved the baby backs. I then purchased a large BGE because I liked the taste of the ribs.
I joined this forum to learn after lurking for a while. I feel that most posts are positive - otherwise I would have gone on to new pastures.
I certainly didn't want to cause a controversy, but I also didn't invite criticism.
After shelling out a lot of money, I'm looking forward to enjoying smoked meats with my family and friends, nothing more, nothing less.Michael

Tighten the two nuts shown in the attached photo and this should fix that problem. Be sure you don't tighten the two outside nuts.......just the ones shown.JNDATHP said:i am new to the egg and excited to start cooking on it. Only problem I'm having is that the lid won't stay open. Any suggestions?

if its not the springs as shown, put a level on it, it doesnt take much to be out of level for that to happen
