Trialing the smoker box theory from a prior post.  Decided on two 1/8" holes due to the smaller size.  Was gifted a badass bunsen burner for nurses week.  Fock paper towels and Rutland starters.  Should've moved on years ago....a game changer.  Doubles as a cane for the geriatric eggas.

Really grateful for such a useful gift.  Burned several weeds on the patio while lighting the egg.

Completely cleaned out the egg.  Rockwood for neutrality.  Apple in the box.    Picked up a back 3 pack at Sams.  Saw this stone box on the way out, looked interesting for a Benjamin.  Would still be a PITA to spin.  Works on a round 22.5" grid diameter.

Wood is in.

Tomorrow or Sunday will be the Pro-Q cold smoke generator with Todd's A-Maz-N apple dust.

I used my weed torch on weeds a couple weeks ago and I must say it did well.

Very coo, but this is a Bunsen burner, btw.

That smoker box will end up rusting out on you and flake chunks of metal.

Yeah, I know...a lame reference to an outdoor burner for the kitchen lab.  I may just refer to it as the bunsen going forward.

It's a 250 fire.  If it rusts, oh well.  I've ruined a carbon steel wok for pizza on the egg too.  And to think the BGE charcoal grate is CI too.....O...M...G

It was sitting on my Blackstone Oven shelf not being used.  A worthy sacrifice to try something different.

Unless your weeds are like mine growing in bark mulch! To prevent fires I still use Round-Up. BTW how's GitterButt? She hasn't posted anywhere in ages.

She's good!  Believe she is planning to head over for Pete's fest in Sterling.  Another reason you should hop in the Vette and come up.  We're still putting away money to start the Good Vybz Compound LLC.  A farm nestled along a valley in the Perry(IA) area.  We will specialize in marijuana, hops, Berkshire, and vibrators...which will be sold and modeled similar to Pampered Chef.  One of the docs I work with is already expressing interest to invest.  Stac has recently designed our company logo.   I'm currently working on a few plaster of Paris prototypes.  You asked.  =)

Butcher chop block project underway after an overnight mineral oil soak.  Feet were added for support while chopping.  Off to Lowes soon to cull some select pine for a former employee discount.

About 3.5 hrs in, cracked the lid.  First time I've seen smoke.

Shoehorned her in with a light dusting of IPA.

Dad, brother, and son(blind test subjects) will be in for a treat.

Curious. Why are you foiling and drilling holes in the Brinkman smoker box? I have one left over from the gasser days that I just set on the burner as is. Never used foil to block the factory holes and never drilled any extra holes in the bottom.
Please explain your theory about the foil and the bottom holes.
    Thanks.

A recent thread, and Charcoal Addict posting a link to an interesting thread.
Basically, downdrafting the smoke into the fire for a cleaner burn.

This just showed up on the doorstep.

A big thanks to @stlcharcoal for setting me up.  Stac and I are already planning Guru torture.  She wants to take her 870 20ga to it.  I would prefer a little waterboarding first, slap it around a lil, maybe a strike with my Mosin Nagant with bayonet attached, then just unload on the POS.  Finish up with the new blowtorch.  It will happen.

Just giving you a hard time about the Bunsen burner. No ill feelings.

I burned through a couple of those CI smoker boxes back in my gas grill days trying to get any type of smoke going. That's how I know they eventually rust and start flaking of in layers.

    No worries bud.

Bad things happen when you start dropping CI into the fire.  I think it was 10 bucks at HD.  I've wasted more on worse.

You're on a roll today @Focker - some of the best laughs I've had today. Your "compound" will get a big draw! Good luck with the cook. I read that smoke box thread the other day so your results will be interesting.

Edit: your smoker box sure beats drilling a dutch oven. If it works, you could always have the holes in the lid welded shut.

Thanks for bearing with my hodge podge free-for-all style.  I agree, tacking a plate is a good idea.

The smoke flavor was really nice, despite getting thumbs down from the douchekabob haters.

With the first cook down, I am a believer in this method.

You going to keep the lab rolling all weekend? Looks like some tasty ribs. Was there as much smoke flavor as you would get by using chunks?

Yeah, gonna do the Pro-Q, then fill this box with dust Sunday.  Figured it would be a good way to get aquainted with the FB and Wifi.

Even though I was a bit desensitized, the smoke was definitely there, and pleasant.  We didn't sauce, didn't need any.   Between the pork, little bit of rub, and smoke, it was balanced just right.  That's from my brother.  He uses WSMs, which put out some good Q too.  I would say it is as good, if not, better, than chunks or chips tossed in the lump.  I will be doing this again in the eggs moving forward.

Have to be honest, was skeptical at first.  But this appears solid for the egg.

+1 on thanks for doing the experiment.  I'm still having anxiety over drilling into one of two 2 quart DO than I never use anyway.  Time to have a few drinks and grab a drill I guess.  Thanks again, and nice looking cook.

No problem.  Plan on using the box filled with dust or chips, and chips added to the lump as well, Sunday.

Today's trial with the Pro-Q was a failure.  The egg doesn't move enough air at these temps, which was a concern going in.  The Pro-Q died twice.  So it was removed, and Persimmon chunks were added.  Will brush a light coating of Mike's Hot Honey on before slicing.

All that is left is a little glue, some brass screws, and a rub down with mineral oil.  Got the work table out in the backyard with ext cord.  A nice Sunday putz while the ribs were cookin'.  Last slab was done with peach dust in the box, and apple chips in the lump.  Plowboys rub.

Dad liked the first slab smoke best.  Brother and I preferred this one.  For anyone cooking for the smoke sensitive, the smoker box method would be a good option.  Lunch was served with some cold smoked Ballyshannon and Jalapeno cheddar deer sausage.  No bushes were harmed for this meal.

The $9 antique cleaver finally metamorphed into a $90 chop box, both cleavers added.
Piloted, countersunk, glued and screwed it together today.  3" thick bamboo is some strong sh!t.  Coated with mineral oil.

Didn't want a seam on the side, failed to compensate when centering.  Oh well, the grip holes are functional.

Gonna rotis a bird in the kettle or WSM IN bird barrel method, chop up the leftovers.

Can't wait to destroy a couple butts Chris Lilly style.
