The spider is one of Tom's best components that is drastically under appreciated.  It works well for supporting a wok.

I also use mine to get a 13" CI grid right down on top of the lump when searing steaks. It gets installed at the beginning of the cook and is in place and very hot when needed.  Can also provide support for an indirect stone.

Also, welcome to the forum ... show us some of your cooks please.

I too am a spider fan. BTW it also makes using a wok on your egg a breeze!

    Welcome to the madhouse!

I have a spider, a gift I requested. I have no idea why I requested it as I have never found a use for it. I must have used it once since it is discolored from heat, but I don't remember when or why.

If I wanted to use the egg for a wok cook, I would simply remove the grid and set the wok on the coals. It works fine, as egg wokking goes, though I prefer my chimney starter as a wok stove.

To sear down low, place the grid on the lump.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

You are really, really, wasting your money on that stupid CI grate. Just put the food on the coals. Hell, for that matter just build a campfire. It's cheaper.

Yeah well, I found two of them at an antique shop. They were $1 each. I really, really doubt that will make much difference in the long run. And when I put the meat on the coals, I have to pick the coals off of the meat when I'm done. Thanks though.

And of course a campfire is cheaper than an egg. Now why didn't I think of that?

I'm surprised, really surprised. I find it hard to believe you actually spent two bucks to avoid removing a little ash and coal from your food. Clearly you could do it without spending the money. For shame!!!

Love the spider.  I use it primarily  when using the wok.  You can also invert it and have your grate just below the gasket.  Great for those in-between cooks like burgers, etc.

The spider is an awesome accessory for a large Egg.... and Wok. I have a lot of the Ceramic Grill Store products and they are high quality and made in America. However if you are looking for only spending 1 to 2 dollars and taking the minimal way out then follow Carolina Q way. Lots of ways to skin a cat in the Egging World. :)

  • Alternatively, if you choose the size wisely, you can simply purchase a wok with a handle that sits in the firebox right above the fire with the grate removed. I used a 14" full carbon wok in a medium Egg (15" grate) with great success. Actually simpler than using a spider and the handle allows you to toss the food or remove from the fire more easily.

Can someone give me info?  Just ordered a XL spider from the CGS.  What diameter CI grate do I need to sear tuna or beef steaks on it? Could find one on CGS website or what the distance is between the vertical wires on the spider.
