Need New Remote Thermo

My Maverick I've had for close to 6 years has finally bit the dust.  I'm looking at getting the ET-733 or the ET-735.  The 733 is currently $69.99 and comes with a pair of silicone gloves (yippy!).  The 735 is currently $79.99.  These are the Amazon prices.  Is the 735 worth the extra $10?  TIA

Not sure about these, but I bought the iGrill for a buddy of mine, and I really liked the interface on the app & the bluetooth had really good range. Way better range than my Maverick. When my Maverick finally dies, I'm going to get an iGrill.

Not sure if you have the correct link there @billt01 That's not gonna help me with the temperature of my meat.

Just got an igrill2 for my bd.  Have yet to use it, but the interface (on the unit and on the app) is very clean and it's ridiculously easy to set.  Looking forward to "retiring" my difficult-to-set maverick.  Or using it only for limited missions.
    It's a 302 thing . . .

I have an Igrill2 and it is pretty nice.

Pros:  Easy to set and use, not very big
Cons:  My range isn't great at my house.  Has a hard time reaching my bedroom that is 30-35 feet away from the smoker.

I would buy again as it is a pretty nice unit.

You are correct, it wont...I just wanted to put that out there...

I have always been more concerned with ensuring the cooker was the correct temperature, and I can always check the temp of the product 1st hand...

sorry if its off topic from the thread.....

I run a couple of the igrill mini's.....  The igrill2 wasn't out when I needed something to monitor. I use one unit as the grid temp monitor and I set it to alarm if it goes out of a certain temp range, high or low.  I use use the other two for the meat units.

Simple interface. I keep it connected to the oldest child's iPad that she forfeited due to bad grades; range isn't a problem!

would I buy them again?  100% Yes

Have you looked at this unit? ... http://www.tappecue.com/

With the extra-care probes it costs more than three Maverick units.  But no more worries about walls or 300 foot ranges ... it'll transmit anywhere wifi or 4G exists.

I'm kind of a purist, but i do like the BBQ Guru for long 8-12+ hour cooks, but i tried using it for some really high temp cooking with Kiawa wood and the probes literally melted. yea like 1400+ degree ratings my "butt"
Anyhow, if you are looking for temp control, which you shouldn't need if you have become a guru or "one with egg", but it is still a great product for long cooks.

I don't want to high jack the thread, but why does everyone want to remotely monitor the temp of the meat and not the cooker?...the meat temp will not fluctuate and will always go up (granted it will probably stall...)...IMO, I am more concerned with a chilly 2am breeze spiking the temp of the cooker...

The BlueTherm that is on sale uses Bluetooth not wifi. I don't think thermoworks offers a wifi model yet.

But I don't think the devices offer any corrective measure if the temp goes lower in the cooker...

I would definatey spend the xtra bones for a Guru or Stoker.

I enjoy being part of the cook and I don't cook anything that takes more than 12 hours. I'm older so my vision is not as good as it once was so reading a thermo sitting on mates is more difficult than looking on my phone. For me a temp controller is a complete waste of money.

90  Percent of the time, a temp controller is not needed, but I have burnt (and I I mean BURNT...) $250.00 of shoulders because of a the 2am breeze that i referred to above. One of the reasons I swear by the Stumps product, the cooker was well over 600 degrees for probably 2 to 3 hours...I opened up the cooker to find the clef bones to all of my butts.....everything else was ash...Best I could tell is the "breeze" caused the temp to spike between 300 to 400 degrees, and once all of the grease caught fire from the butts, it was all over until I got up around 7am to see the carnage...

    I use the iGrill2

I put one probe in the meat, the other in the dome temp gauge hole.

This way I can monitor the dome and the meat from the kitchen.

This is all I need to be able to do. Monitor from the kitchen or my lounge chair on the patio. The thermoworks product is probably nice but the Igrill is half the price so I think that is the direction I'm heading.

At what temp were you cooking at?  When I have done overnight cooks I have my XL set at 225 to 235 and both the top and bottom vents are maybe an 1/8" open.  I have got up the next day and the XL was at 265, but that is not that bad.  I have had an issue where it started raining in the early morning and my temp dropped, but I have the SmokeWare cap now and it is not a problem anymore.  I have looked at pit controllers, but as others have said I don't see the need for it yet.  Sounds like @saluki2007 has had no problems in the last 6 years so he is just wanting to replace something that is isn't as expensive as a pit controller maybe.  The Guru isn't to badly priced, but they get you when you need more then one probe.

@saluki2007, I have been using this for the last 2+ years, http://www.amazon.com/Ivation-Long-Range-Wireless-Thermometer/dp/B00ANCXJR6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462369739&sr=8-1&keywords=invation+temp+gauge,
but have this on order and is supposed to shipped in July.  https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/meater-the-only-wire-free-smart-meat-thermometer#/

I spent a little more and got the 4 block one.  I have had no problems with my temps during a cook, but I want to be able to leave to house to run errands and still check my cook.  You do that on this and the Tappacue and maybe the iGrill 2.  Many choices out there, you just have to find what you like.

Were you using a drip pan?  I have some good flare ups after a pork butt cook and didn't wrap the PS or use a drip pan, but not during a cook.  That most have been a pretty fatty pig and the pork fat can get intense when burning off.

no drip pan....really cant use a drip pan with 18+ butts, I'd need a drip bucket...If its not windy out, the fire can be controlled fairly well by the vents..if its breezy..the fire can "take off" even if the vents are closed or "choked" down. I will see if I can find a picture of what was left....it was quite disappointing.

I bought the ET-732 open box on Amazon for $40.00 last year. It works great and I have had no problem with it transmitting from the Egg on the porch at one end of the house to my bedroom on the second floor on the opposite end of the house. Pretty much just use it for low and slow brisket or butt cooks.

I have a FlameBoss 200....better product....and top notch customer service.  Have a problem with the FlameBoss, contact them and,a warranty replacement is in transit the next day. Had a problem with the Guru....ship it to them. "Inspect" it, returned with the same exact time problem. Of course it took close to 2 weeks for this to happen. They couldn't be bothered to check all of the equipment. Took a total of 9 weeks to get the $8 blower motor replaced...by the time they sent me a replacement I had already bought a replacement blower off Amazon.

I have no need for a fan assisted unit.  To me, that takes away part of the fun.  I find it hard to believe that a breeze would cause an inferno in the egg as well.  I can see have 18 butts dripping down into the fire and causing one, but that would have nothing to do with a breeze.  Further, I can't fit that many butts in a large and I always use a pan.  I just want something to monitor the temp of the meat.  I have a thermapen to I use when it's time to start checking final temps.

Being able to monitor the grate temp is a bonus, and while wifi thermos would be nice to monitor while I'm out, it doesn't really benefit me if I'm out.  Can't really doing anything about changing the temp if you are 10-15 min away.  If I'm doing a long cook and have to leave, a small spike isn't going to hurt anything.
