Pop but no crack?
I reverse-seared a couple of T-bones last night, and as I was bringing up the temp to around 600, I heard the dreaded *pop*. I finished the steaks as rain fell and the sun set.
This morning, with better light, I removed everything from the Egg, cleaned out all of the ash and wiped down the inside with a dry paper towel so I could get a good look. Happily, after inspecting the inside and out (including the bottom of the outside) with a flashlight, I was unable to find any cracks.
So my question is: Do any of you routinely hear pops when you're cooking, yet your Eggs don't suffer any cracks?

I have heard my cast iron grate pop as it expands from the heat and gets deformed . I guessed the noise was from it releasing from the side of the fire box as it got hot.More meat please !! :-)

Any chance it was lump popping? Or was it a ceramic sound. Assuming the later?Columbia, SC --- LBGE 2011 -- MINI BGE 2013

Definitely deeper and louder than lump popping. At first I thought that maybe the sound came from the bands or hinge when I closed the lid, but it's not like that's happened before either.Rob

Chubbs makes a good point
but i'll add it could still be ceramic. The crack doesn't have to be big enough to be visible. At this point anyway.
I could tell by putting my platesetter down that it had a crack, because it made a dull thud instead of the clearer ringing sound.
But I couldn't see the crack. It's still together after more than a year, and the crack is making its way across the thing. The crack is finally obvious and visible
it may just be the start
check down at the lower vent on the bottom under the egg. As @fishlessman has mentioned a few times, that's where these tend to start. My large did that about 2 years ago, still don't see a crack.
Not to get technical, but according to chemistry alcohol is a solution...

Do you have a CI grid? Mine is full of cracks. Chunks missing too, but there are a number of places where it cracked completely through a rib, but no pieces fell off. I heard only one of these, where a 2-3" piece broke off. First you hear the crack, then a split second later, you hear the flying iron hit the egg wall. Then a split second after that, you hear yourself say, "Oh, sh#$."
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I heard a pop 2 years ago. Never found anything till I did a clean out at Christmas.

And I clean out after each low and slow!!

Bingo! Looked closer and saw a crack at the front, about at the midpoint of the vent.
From what I've read, best course of action is to file a claim, keep an eye on the crack and if it doesn't worsen, keep using the Egg as it is?

I have a couple of cracked bases. Had enough "spare" parts that after buying the newer high dome for the XL we now have 2 XLS. Use the cracked all the time for low and slow cooks...never a problem....

My dealer wants the parts back. I have a broke XL fire box in my truck going back today. It in 3 pieces so it would be hard to use. They gave me one of the old style ones that doesn't have a cut in it for expanding so at some point he said it will crack again. It is also taller to the grate is at felt line now.XL, WSM, Coleman Road Trip Gas GrillKansas City, Mo. -
After my recent nightmare with my dealer he may want the parts back from me in the future. From what I have gathered the distributors set the rules as to the return of broken parts.Ladeback69 said:dougcrann said:I have a couple of cracked bases. If I ever need another warranty item I very well may just deal directly with the "Mothership"...local dealer has informed me that I will be paying shipping in the future so...
