Hi folks,
One of the nicest things about the BGE is that I can set it up and go away for the day. I'm barbecuing on weekends mostly and typically go out with my family for several hours at a time but would like to check how the process is going on my smartphone.
I want the ability to check the BBQ and meat temperature while I'm away. I did some searching online and at this forum. Cyber Q is mentioned. I don't care about a fan on the coals. I simply want to know has the BBQ dropped below 225 for instance or is the pulled pork/turkey breast or whatever done faster than I thought while I'm at the park or at the grocery store. I was thinking even about a webcam on the BBQ thermometer sitting by the grill. Has anyone tried a webcam?
Also, does the igrill do this, as my BGE dealer claims that I can check the temperature while I'm away from home using this device but I haven't seen it mentioning anything other than bluetooth connectivity. Also, has anyone tried the Tappecue device that I found out about online?

sometimes I point my webcam at my digital receiver and stream it on twitch.tv when i'm smoking brisket and have to go to work

Ditto what @valois said. I use a Maverick ET-732, monitor the remote with an old Iphone streaming via Manything. Gives me the freedom to leave without worrying about the fire.

The only WIFI thermometer option without a blower is the Tappecue. It comes with 4 probes with and monitors from an app on your smart phone. I've only had mine for a short time and have only cooked with it twice so I cannot give you a 100% review. What I can tell you is that the setup is extremely easy, the in app customized settings are great and the ability to chart your entire cook is a great feature.

As to checking the temp on an iGrill while you are away from home, your dealer is incorrect. And it doesn't display the temperature constantly, so you can't use a jury-rigged monitoring system like @valois and I (and others) do.
Big_Green_Craig - looking forward to more of your thoughts on the Tappecue.

@Dondgc
Here is the main screen on the app. (obviously I'm not currently cooking anything) You have the ability to name each probe and set a programmed doneness or customize it. I like it so far!

I've got an older Dropcam that I'll occasionally use to point at my wired Thermoworks.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk

@Big_Green_Craig do you not have to be within a certain distance of your wifi connection? Or is it web based?
As as far as I know the CyberQ works this way as well?! Correct me if I am wrong but I understood that if you are on the same network you can monitor it, if you aren't then you are pretty much SOL.XLBGE, MMBGE, CyberQ -
Once it's connected to your wireless network, it can be monitored from anywhere in the world via the world wide web.1move said:@Big_Green_Craig do you not have to be within a certain distance of your wifi connection? Or is it web based?
