How to cool an above temp egg????

I knew better, but I had 3 butts to prepare. Lit my XL and temp was climbing VERY slowly. Started other chores I needed to do. Checked the egg. Almost 500 degrees. WTH???? I have completely shut off air intake, daisy wheel almost shut, burping regularly to release heat, still above 300. What else can be done???

Just gotta wait it out. Burping is adding oxygen so that's probably not helping.
-
Stop burping to release heat. What you are actually doing is dumping large amounts of oxyen in and stoking the fire.
Fill a pan with ice and set it on the cooking grid. Close bottom vent to almost closed, same with daisy. Wait.They/Them

Just put the butts in. I assume they are going to be in there for a few hours. So what if it is over your target temp for a while. In the end it won't really matter.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk

That's the best advice yet. I shall follow your directions. To paraphrase an old war moto " Damn the butts, full speed ahead".johnmitchell said:+1 on what @DMW has advised.. This has happened to all of us.. Pour yourself another beverage and have fun..Tommy

I agree with HeavyG. When you put the butts in it'll drop the temp and won't make a difference come time to eat.
-
You cannot release heat by burping it. You are adding WAY more oxygen to it than it would have if you merely had it set for low temps.
All tou are doing is cooling off the thermometer, but feeding the fire
think about it: how small is the vent opening when the egg is at 250? Now, how open is the egg when you lift the lid?

You want desperate? Hit it with a hose
a number of times i have poured iced cooler water through the hot egg to cool it for transport.
You can't do anything to these that Bruce at BGE R&D hasn't already done
still though, you are only making it hotter by opening it. It isn't possible to cool the egg that way[social media disclaimer: irony and sarcasm may be used in some or all of user's posts; emoticon usage is intended to indicate moderately jocular social interaction; the comments toward users, their usernames, and the real people (living or dead) that they refer to are not intended to be adversarial in nature; those replying to this user are entering into a tacit agreement that they are real-life or social-media acquaintances and/or have agreed to or tacitly agreed to perpetrate occasional good-natured ribbing between and among themselves and others] -

That makes my heart almost stop.......I would be concerned that the extreme temperature shock could cause the egg to crackDarby_Crenshaw said:You want desperate? Hit it with a hose

You posted a pic of that on the old forum. As I recall, the cooler was in the bed of a pickup at a Pats tailgate. I have tried to find it, but no luck.Darby_Crenshaw said:a number of times i have poured iced cooler water through the hot egg to cool it for transport.I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Wet wood chips help along with the advice already given.

No big deal throw the meat on, you will never notice a difference, and the meat alone will bring the temp down. You can run the whole cook north of 300 and not notice the difference. Some say they can but some say they can tell bottled vs. canned beer too, lol.

Pour gas on it? Stop drop and roll?

I put the butts on and got the temp down finally. Just really irritates me that I sat there for the longest time with hardly any change in the dome temp. Finally gave up and went in to prep some food. Came back out to check and it had jumped 300 degrees. It never fails.

I think RRP came up with the idea of wet chips to cool a fire. Was a good one
