Heading to Atlanta tomorrow

I'm heading to Atlanta tomorrow to see The Boss.  After the concert my buddy and I are going to hit The Varsity.  Where should I have my pre-concert libations close to downtown?  I plan on going to Roswell Hardware on Friday morning, it looks like I can save $100 on a Mini-Max compared to our Charlotte area prices.

  • Check out Grindhouse Burgers or the Vortex. The Varsity is way over rated in my opinion. If you're into BBQ, then check out Fat Matt's Rib Shack or Fox Bros.

X2 on the Varsity. It's got the ambiance (I guess you could call it that), but the food is just not very good. I've been to both the Vortex and Grindhouse and like them both. Vortex is more of a bar. Gotta be of age to get in and can get smokey in there. Burgers are great, though. Grindhouse has some of my favorite burgers around and really good milkshakes.

Yeah skip the varsity. We don't eat out much so I can't recommend anywhere else really. Flip burger was pretty good but I don't even remember where it was.
  • Thanks for the heads up on The Varsity. I've heard great things about the Vortex so we'll probably head there.

This is a watering hole close to the concert.

  • Wow no love for The Varsity. It's definitely not in the league with the vortex but I like it. I grew up going there with dad. It's fast food...full of grease...but it's an experience.

If you want to eat like a man, get one of the Coronary Bypass options. I've done the double, but the bigger ones aren't available on the weekends.

Go to the Varsity, not for the food but the vibe and the checkmark. Then you'll never have to go again.

  • I would hit the varsity it is an experience, not entirely culinary. Lots of cool places near downtown Ecco, Empire State South, JTC kitchen, Bocado, six feet under, are all worth checking out.

If you go to the Varsity, go for a snack and get the FO or a fried pie (peach is my favorite).

One Eared Stag is another cool place. Spendy, but worth it.

Going to The Varsity in Atl. is about the place, the history and the experience more than about the food. I say don't miss it if you have never been.
It is like the experience of going to a Hard Rock Cafe...you don't really go there just for the food.

I love the Varsity but I wouldn't eat there before the show unless you like using the toilets at the concert
  • I'm glad the tide has turned in favor of the Varsity. I haven't been and heard that it needs to be on the list. I'm thinking after many beers and a 3 hours Springsteen concert that the greasy food from the Varsity will be just what I need before going to bed.

It's exactly what you need. The rings are awesome. Don't leave with a FO (frozen orange) and a fried pie. That would be criminal.

The first time we went we were all drunk and a friends wife was driving and about 20 minutes into a 40 minute ride home I started sweating. This stuff is potent.

Touch the Varsity base.  No haute cuisine but a good glimpse into ATL in town culture and a tradition.  Scope out the bathrooms on the way into the concert venue.  You'll thank me later.
