Collecting Ash

I'm looking for a better way to clean the ash out of my BGE. I use the ash tool and a tin pan I have cut to fit better up against my BGE. However, it still makes a mess. Anybody have something that works really well? Thanks for the help.

I use a shop vac with a small particle filter.

ya kick ash basket, and clean it from the top. I did this a few months back and its so much better than cleaning from out that little door

Shop Vac - cold only.

+1 on the shop vac. Great way to go.John in the Willamette Valley of Oregon

I use the KAB also, still have to get at the bottom. These are a little pricey, but they work. The curved lip fits in the bottom track to avoid spillage.

Shop vac. Tossed around the idea of a Kick Ash Basket...but am on a fixed income and hate wasting chunk...

The bottom-track lip is something I wasn't aware of, wow! That could make all the difference.ScottNC said:I use the KAB also, still have to get at the bottom. These are a little pricey, but they work. The curved lip fits in the bottom track to avoid spillage.

I pull out my KAB and shake the ash off the remaining lump, and then pull the in-Egg ash out with the tool before replacing the KAB; a lipped dustpan would make it especially clean and quick.
Either method goes quicker than scaring up an extension cord and running my shop vac out to the back patio, then putting it all away.“All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure.”

Because of a post by @RRP , we use this thing.
It fits beneath the clean-out of our nest-borne LBGE and allows us to rake directly into it. No muss, no fuss - unless exceptionally windy.
About 20 bucks.

Clean out in a nest is far easier than a table or cart. The procedures listed above all work fine, I've tried them all. It's just a matter of what fits your personality and preferences. Some people need it spic and span and don't care what it takes (shop vac) Others just rake them into a pan or bucket. You decide.

I just rake mine on the floor of my porch then cuss at the mess and complain when people track inside. Works for meColumbia, SC --- LBGE 2011 -- MINI BGE 2013

I use a small bucket from ace similar to the one posted above. Then scatter it off my deck into my yard. I heard it's good for grass. No idea if that's true or not.

I utilize my ash to deodorize my trash cans. I use an old paint rolling pan, the ash tool, and dump all ash directly into my trash cans without bagging it. Does a nice job of deodorizing them, especially during the summer.

I use my fingers to poke through the ash that builds up in the holes.
My XL taught me bad habits. It can hold a ton of ash so rarely have to clean it.I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

That explains your dirty finger nails!Ozzie_Isaac said:I use my fingers to poke through the ash that builds up in the holes.

Just bought one this weekend can't wait to use it. I had accidentally poured the contents from the bottom of the bag in which clogged airflow. This kick ash basket looks like it will be so easy to clean and help better airflow.poster said:ya kick ash basket, and clean it from the top. This set up looks pretty cool! Just not entirely sure how the damper door would work unless the handle comes off.Check out this item I found on eBay: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=121818731276&alt=web

Yup. I only remove the ash when I finish a bag. I rake the ash into the empty bag. Love the XL.Ozzie_Isaac said:

Hey, you XL folks. How often do you remove the guts from your egg and completely clean it? Haven't had mine long, removed all of it in prep for a long brisket cook. Hardly anything there to clean out.

@slovelad I like that ramp you made.
I either use the ask tool in one hand and scrape it into an old frisbee in my other hand for quick clean-outs. I use 2 buckets if I'm cleaning out a lot. One bucket upside down and the other sitting on it so that the open bucket is just below the draft door height. Then I use the ash tool and let the stuff fall right into the bucket.Cooking on an XL and Medium in Bethesda, MD. -

Here is a platform under egg that has a built in ash pan below the clean outDoubleEgger said:

I use a Kick Ash Basket in my Large BGE. I hardly ever have to rake ash out of the bottom opening. When I do, I use the bucket shown above. Before each cook, I also lift the basket out and shake it back and forth over this bucket. It fits just right. The KAB has changed how I deal with ash in a very good way!

I usually do it after burning up three or four 18lb bags of lump. At the end of a bag , i use a small hand shovel to to scoop the ashes out of the top of the egg , and use a shop vac with a bag in it to get the rest.FarmerTom said:Hey, you XL folks.
