There is a device in car detailing that fits in a 5 gallon bucket and does this. Grit Guard, available many places.

slightly off topic: charcoal dust and small pieces are great additions to a compost pile. Unburned charcoal increases porosity, and also can help hold nutrients (on the particle surfaces) in the soil when you use the compost. Lump avoids the problems of potentially getting chemical additives into your soil. Charcoal ash is a different issue, and opinions are mixed about adding it to compost or directly into soil at all. The calcium carbonate in ash makes them fairly alkaline. If you have acidic soil, or are composting a lot of acidic material such as vegetable waste (typically quite acidic) you will be ok, at least in moderation. As always, pH testing your soil (and compost) is critical.

My Dad always used something like this. Once Mom was carrying the steaks or burgers into the house, he'd pick up the the grill (cheap one, thinner than a Weber kettle) and dump the hot Kingsford briquets (lit with gasoline, of course) into this contraption on the gravel driveway and then poured a bucket of cold water over them, to put them out. He'd later pick out the unburned pieces to use in the next cook. Frugality raised during the Depression!RRP said:
