Egg Sizing For A Second Egg

Hey guys,

So, I've been an owner of a LG egg for a year now and absolutely love it.  During that year, I've been lurking on the forum trying different recipes, techniques etc and have cooked some awesome foods...lasagna, deep dish pizza, bread, Christmas turkey, wings, chops, prime rib, steaks etc...

I'm not a huge smoker as the family is not keen on it...I know...I'm working on it...lol.  My problem is that my LG doesn't hold the quantity I need without buying a lot of racks = storage = issues.

I'm going to keep the LG but want opinions from others.  When cooking say a lasagna...family recipe makes 2 pans where only one will fit on the LG. Deep dish pizza (which is freaking amazing) will just barely fit the cast iron pan on the grill.

I'm toying with the idea of:

1) Another LG
2) A XL
3) A XXL

For the XL and XXL, this would be used when the LG is too small but LG would be 75% of all cooking.  It's just my wife and I but we entertain family and friends a LOT.

Let it me know your thoughts as it's greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Here's some data points on the options you have listed:

    1. Another LG - If you have built up a collection of add-ons and accessories that fit the LG, you can use them interchangeably. You already know the limitations of the LG.
    2. XL - You can fit heaps of stuff on a XL, a homemade 2nd tier with nuts, bolts, and a cheap Weber grid expand your options even more.
    3. XXL - For the price of an XXL, you can buy 3 XL's. The XXL is an impressive piece of ceramic engineering, but unless you are building a collection, I don't see it as practical.

  • Christmas turkey. Turned out amazing. Meat was injected, a very light pecan smoke...so tender it melted in your mouth.

  • Prime rib...turned out awesome. Sorry I don't take an after pic as we were all devouring it.   Very moist.

    LG for sharing eggcessories.
Not mentioned BUT the MM.  Even w/ entertaining using the LG & MM together works great. Then when not entertaining and it's just the two of you it's perfect.

  • Home made bread. Been making it for years. Crust came out totally different on the egg. Soooooo good. Never been able to do this in an oven. Fantastic.

  • I have the XL, it was my first purchase,  my father has the large and it suites his house perfectly.  It's just him and mom.  I have not had any issues thus far with space on the XL.  I have looked at the XXL just out of curiosity and I can tell you that I would never spend the money for the small amount of room gained.  I have been looking to add the MM but that's for he opposite reasons.  I want something that is quick for the weeknight cooks.  If I were you I would look at the XL and also consider adding another large or even a medium.  In the end it's personal preference.  Best of luck.

  • Doesnt really address your other issues but I've been doing my lasagna in cheap metal loaf pans and do 4-6 of those instead of big lasagna pans. Can use more of your available cooking space plus you end up with more crispy edges.

As far as another egg, I would go with XL. Xxl is WAY over priced. Hell you could by 2 XXL and still have money to spare.

  • Thanks for all the comments guys. I'm still looking at the XL, MM or LG as my second...the XXL is out based on research and comments to back it up.

Do you find when baking that using the throw away metal meets your needs?  I've always been a cast iron or stone bakeware guy.

I have a large and have been looking at a second smaller egg.   I am having trouble deciding between a medium and the MM.   If you put the medium in a table, it is really a good deal.  The MM is actually more expensive than the medium is you don't get all the extras for the medium.    I also wonder if the MM is too small for me, as I often cook for three and want leftovers.

Based on what you said, I'd go with the XL. It'll give you the space you need at a reasonable price point. You can always buy an adjustable rig for it and store it in the egg if you need even more space.

  • The ones I use aren't technically disposable. They are just cheap. I think I buy them for 99 cents a piece. They actually hold up well and if they get kinda worn or you take a few to somebodys house they are cheap enough to just leave them. I can fit four at a time with them.

This may be a dumb question but if you have 2 eggs, do you really set them up for different cooking?  Ie..one direct and one indirect...plus different temps?  When I cook veggies, I normally just time it correctly and put them in with the meat so they cook as they would in a roasting pan in The oven.

Do do you guys do the same?

  • Any reason for the smaller one?  What about a second LG then accessories will work between them.  I'm only asking as I'm also thinking of that in the back of my mind.

  • Only reason I ever tried it was because I was cooking lasagna for some friends who had just had a baby and I wanted some too and didnt wanna carry thrm a sliced up lasagna so thats what I came up with.

  • Go XXL. These guys don't know what they are talking about. Go big or go home young man. It's only money...spend it now or the kids spend it when you die.

And yes I have fired up 5 eggs at 1 time for different temps and set ups, so more then 1 egg is never a bad thing.

I have a large that served me well for the 2 of us and the 5/6 times a year that we entertain. I got the small for using at a different temp zone for veggies with no smoke when the protein was smokin away on the large. Then I bought the mini for the weeknight cooks. If I had it to do over again I would have skipped the small and just bought the mini but I thought the mini looked toyish.  Definitely not the case because it is the most used egg at my house with the large being second because of using the wok for stir fries.  Bottom line is get what you think works for you and if you listen to everyone here you will have one of every size.  Not a bad thing but certainly not needed.

After rereading your post and looking at your cooks/interests, you might want to consider a wood fired pizza oven instead of another egg. Check out the Forno Bravo.

XL all the way. You know the limitations of the large so go for the extra room on the XL.

  •  Thanks everyone...I appreciate the input.  Just ordered an XL to compliment the LG I already have.  The plan is to use the LG for weekday stuff for my wife and I then get into it with the XL on the weekends ;). Thanks for all the comments etc.  As for cooking style, I really prefer the egg over wood...love the egg and how it cooks even when baking.

If if you haven't tried it, next time you're going to bake anything in the oven (especially if it has a crust) do it on the egg...you will be amazed.

    happy cooking everyone...

I love my Large and Small Combo, especially if you primarily cook for two.  Have you considered and AR combo, probably could do more lasagna that way...

My oven hasn't worked in 5 years. Everything goes in the egg that would go into the oven. I'm replacing the oven as we speak but anything that I'm cooking is going into the egg
