Broken Plate Setter

I was moving some things around yesterday and my plate setter dropped less than a foot and snapped in half. First off, how is it that fragile?? Second and I guess more importantly, can anyone recommend a good replacement? Is this the best way to go? I mostly, and have only, cooked chicken and briskets.

    Buy a cast iron platesetter.  I just got a BGE and the guy said to get the cast iron.  It's not much more and it won't break.  My cast iron platesetter was $85.  Unless you're just really looking for the adjustable system, the link you provided is outrageous for functionality you don't really need.  On top of that, your "platesetter" is another breakable stone.

    Ebay has some good alternatives. If your looking to keeps cost low ... I'd go that direction.

    I have an XL and my PS is cracked nearly through, so I chose to replace before it gave up under load.

    I bought the woo and stone for the XL to get the stone down lower.  I didn't buy an AR yet, but that will be my next addition.  I've only used it twice but it works really well.
    THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

    its hard to beat the adjustable rig for function-ability, only have large eggs here. call tom at his business, he will set you up properly. with the large you want to get the spider as well and set the stone lower under the rig and it gives you a wok setup as well. you cant go wrong with an adjustable rig setup

    Who's Tom? I'm not sure what you mean regarding "the spider" either. Thanks all for the feedback.

    It happens pretty easily. Mine was slightly cracked and broke as I was placing it in the Egg. If it was under warranty BGE will replace it.

    How is it that fragile?  It is ceramic, I would think a one inch drop onto a "hard" service would be more than enough to break it.

    There are several alternatives, cast iron, steel, I like a few 1" thick fire bricks cheap and easy.  I also like that I can use the fire bricks in a row across the BGE from side to side rather than the "tri" arrangement of the plate setter.
  • If you dont need or want to spend the money on an adjustable rig, just buy a spider and a stone. Thats what I use for my set-up after loaning out my platesetter.

    If it is less then a year old it is still covered under your warranty.  The one for my XMLhas a crack in it and they replaced it and the new one is setting the garage ready to be used.  Now if I didn't have the back up I would go with the AR/Woo2 combo.  Can't go wrong with it.

    I would glue it back together with JB Weld. Worth a try!

    How would it be under warranty when he said that it "Dropped less than one foot"?

    @Mattman3969 ... you're correct.

    Just realized that the picture isn't from the original poster.  BrookieP's picture seems to show smoke in the split.  My plate setter has a hairline crack that is collecting smoke right now ... that should prove that it wasn't being used for disk golf when it finally spilts.

    @Jeepster47 That is how mine was. BGE sent me the replacement and I kept using the old one until it finally kicked the bucket.

    you might consider the xl adjustable rig, 17.5" round stone and 20" round stainless grid.  with these three pieces, you can:

    - cook your chicken direct on a raised grid in the dome;
    - smoke your brisket and once set-up have full access to the lump without touching anything;  see the brisket video on our site.
    - cook thin crust pizza in the dome;
    -have two grids for direct cooks

    if you add the xl woo to the mix, you can;
    -have a platform inside the fire ring to sear closer to the lump on a grid of your choice,
    - add a wok to wok;
    -grill at the felt line;
    -smoke at the felt line;
    -have two grids for indirect cooks.

    I am sure I'm forgetting some capabilities, still on my first cup of coffee this morning.

    Bummer.  If doing it all over again, i would skip platesetter altogether and get a spider and stone from cgs.  You get to add wood for flavor during a cook, its easier to clean amd adds even more versatility by enabling the use of a wok, etc.

    A platesetter split down the middle glued back together makes me uneasy as the joint will have stress when heat gets applied.  If one of the feet broke, that would be a little different but right down the middle would cause me to get a replacement

    A cast iron unit looks like a suitable replacement but spider amd stone allow more airflow so you can get your egg to higher temperatures for indirect searing amd pizza making, at least this has been my experience

    I have an XL and I thought the CGS bsetup was outrageous until I had it layed out in my kitchen. Everything is superbly constructed and the only thing I'd ever be worried about breaking is the stone. Plus I use the setup with nearly every cook I do so it's well worth the cost in the long run.
  • @tjv - just got a spider but have yet to use it. Will be a Christmas project for sure.

    @BrookieP - the firebricks make a great heat deflector. I know if you google "The Naked Whiz" he has a pictorial description of ways to use firebricks.  Just grab a cheap weber grate to put them on and use the good BGE grate for the meats!

    J B Weld is only good to 500º. Not sure I'd even risk it.

    I'd cut small pieces off of the broken PS and use them to raise up your drip pans, pizza stone, etc.
