Cook's Illustrated recommendation flub

The Jan/Feb '16 issue Equipment Corner recommends the ThermoWorks TimeStick including a picture and reference to both the clock and the timer features. Problem is the picture is of the TimeStick Trio which has 3 timers and no clock compared to the TimeStick  which is the clock and timer combo. I just thought in case someone was thinking about a stocking stuffer based on Cook's Illustrated's recommendation. Here's mine...

they have the proper pics for each timer. The TimeStick was their top pick. The Trio was recommended with reservations.

Didn't think they had that technology in 1916.

  • @RRP Ron, which one is the most useable for our type of cooking? Been thinking of a purchase but I suppose the correct answer is "Get both".

I have the trio and like it very much. I usually use it for counting up to see how long something has been on the egg; ie, for steaks, timer 1 for side 1, timer 2 for side 2, etc. Also good for when you are cooking multiple items you can time each one separately. I even use it for low & slows because I can never remember the time that I put something on. Just have to remember to start the timer  =). lol!

Yes - both! But if it really boiled down to just buying one it would be the Time Stick over the Trio. Reason is I don't wear a watch and I don't carry a smart phone either so the clock and timer works for me - yes you can switch back and forth! With the trio while I do set all 3 I have a "knack" for clearing the whole thing instead of just one of the 3! Operator stupidity at it's finest! =)

I have the Stick and like it ok. Thought about getting the Trio when it came out but just knew that I would never remember exactly what the three events were supposed to be timing.

For multiple timed events or a stopwatch function I just use an app on my iMac or tablet or phone. I can name each timer so I know for sure what the timer is for and not have to rely on my old brain. :)

Idiot proof timer for seniors. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006OK7RRO  It has four different timers with a whiteboard beside it to write down what it is timing. I don't need to use it often, but it's nice when working on a lot of dishes. I also have the TimeStick and like it too.

Hi, my name is Jeepster and I'm a gadget whore.  So, yep I have both.  I seem to grab the trio first, so that would be my recommendation.  There's a wall clock by the door to the egg, so not that much of a need for local time on the timer.

I have a smart phone so could use it for an assortment of timers, but really like a dedicated and relatively cheap timer to use around the grill.  My mind wanders and I can be clumsy ... found my tape measure in the freezer a couple days ago.

Had wings last night ... set #1 to a 15 minute countdown and #3 to count up.  Wings went on the grill and both 1 and 3 were started.  Flipped the wings every 15 minutes when #1 went off ... #3 kept me on track for total time on the grill.  Lot of cooks like that where you want to know total time on the grill and time until the next intervention ... that's not a direct readout on the timestick.

I have both.  I tend to grab the trio first as well, but still use the Timestick.  I use their Extra Loud Big & Loud Timer the most though.  Either I set it to 60 minutes for wings or I just start the time on other cooks to remind me how long everything has been cooking..  Gadget whore as well...

we have in our kitchen a stove and a mwave plus access to at least 2 cell phones with timer "apps".  Meat gets cooked to temp not time.
  • Man, I don't look forward to old age where I can't swag the time on my cooks.  =)

I use the TimeStick.  It fits better in my hand.  I like the clock feature.

I don't really time much, but it makes me feel important.

To me the timer around my neck keeps me from forgetting to go check the probe style thermometer stuck in the meat to monitor the internal temperature. I too am a firm believer in cooking to temperature - not time.

    OK.

Some of us cook things other than meat where time is at least somewhat important.

Some of us might want to flip or rotate stuff (including meat) every "x" minutes.

    Timers are useful for that.

I use the free "Kitchen Timer" app on my android. Has 3 timers on it. And it can access my Stoker if I'm running it.

Timers are great.  For timing stuff.  Like I know if I put some Coke Zeros in the freezer with "turbo" on, they will start freezing in 70 minutes.  Perfect in 50.

Also time is great when you boil stuff like pasta.  Meat on the other hand, time is useful to know when to start checking using internal temp, tenderness, etc.  The classic time/temp/per pound instructions that come with your roast and turkey are general guidelines that more often than not give you an overcooked slab that meets draconian FDA requirements of overcooking for "safety".  Bah, humbug.

here's a hint that may not be necessary for everybody, but if someone has a shorter torso OR sits a lot in-between waiting while having the Stick or Trio around their neck the magnetic back will grab on to a ferrous belt buckle and become annoying. My solution was to shorten the lanyard.
