Carried a CAR 15 for a year in 1969 .Nothing like sweeping a kill zone at night with artillery illumination and having that "wonderful" weapon jam on you .Between the jamming and how inaccurate it was opted out for a captured M1 carbine .When working a dog small is better .

WTF??? I didn't make it up, an Arizona prosecutor did. The most famous case that I was referencing (the one you deleted when you quoted me), was Harold Fish. He was a retired high school teacher hiking in a state park. Some dogs came at him and he fired a shot into the ground to scare them off only to be attacked by a homeless man claiming to be their owner. Fish had a 10mm Kimber, which the prosecutor made a HUGE deal about--they used terms like "cop killer" since it was bigger than what the police carried. All the other evidence was Fish's own quotes when he was interviewed by police. The only physical evidence they had was this "scary" 10mm with hollow points and they fooled the jury into believing the BS. Long story short, he was convicted of murder and was in prison for five years before judge overturned the case and he was released. He was out 2-3 yrs, then died from cancer.

Carry what you want, but if the worst happens and a prosecutor starts adding up a trail of evidence, this could be something they use against you. Same goes for social media "likes" or posts, modifying a handgun with "hair trigger", if you had ANY alcohol in your system, etc. If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, and even worse the wrong county where the prosecutor wants to make a name for themselves.......stack the cards in your favor. The adage of "I'd rather be judged by 12, than carried by 6", is true IMHO, but those 12 can be just as bad if you're in the wrong place.

A good friend just attended a class on dos and don'ts in the aftermath of protecting yourself with a gun. One piece of advice resonated with me. Immediately call 911 and when the police arrive immediately invoke your 4th, 5th, and 6th amendment rights. Make sure you're well represented by your attorney before you start yammering information that will probably be used against you.

@bgebrent , was looking for something for my wife the other day at the gun shop. I looked at what I think was a Taurus .357 611, it was a matte black, revolver. She's not looking to carry, just something for her, for home. All I have are autos, and she doesn't do well with the slides.

Thoughts?

should probably pick up a gun though, the threat of an isis attack is much more than a zombie apocalypse or a sharknado ....need to be prepared for everything nowadays

I have been carrying for a number of years now. Mostly started carrying when I bought my RV and began traveling around the country.

But I hate loose clothing, pistol in the pocket or IWB hostlers. A friend of mine turned me onto SneakyPete. It is a company in NY that makes holsters for most individual personal carry pistols. I wear it in the open on my belt and it just makes me look like a geek with a large PDA.

In fact I refer to it as my PDA, Personal Defense Armament. A local deputy saw it one night in a restaurant and asked what it was. I gave him the PDA answer and he nodded and said, "Sure, but what caliber?" He asked if he could examine it and then asked for all of the contact info on where I got it. He was planning to order one for himself, wife and son.

He said it meets all of the requirements of "Concealed Carry" and to date I have never been challenged. Mine is for a S&W 380 Body Guard. I also have a Beretta 9mm with 15 round mag.

Just thought that those of you that carry might be interested in it.

I claim no expertise but .357 could be a bit overpowering for your wife. Depends on her comfort level with that caliber. I understand the want for a revolver. I got my SWMBO .38 cuz that's what she's comfortable with. You could of course shoot .38 out of the .357. Have try a few out and it should become clear. Good luck brother!

.38 still has plenty of kick to it......and the ballistics suck. That's why they added another 1/8" to the case length and went to .357 Mag. If you compare the .38 Special to a 9mm Luger/Auto, the 9mm beats it every time in muzzle velocity and energy. Plus, a semi auto can hold up to 17-19 rounds of 9mm vs. a revolver holding 6 rounds. I would take your wife to the gun shop and see if she can pull the trigger on a DA revolver or **** it. I had bought a S&W 342 as a purse gun for my wife--by the time she pulled the trigger she had contorted her hand so much that she would miss a target at 7 yards. She hated the thing. I carried it for a while but wasn't very accurate with it either. It was an airweight, and with the CG on a revolver so high it had a hell of a jump to it. I have also had ladies in CCW classes that could not **** the hammer on a .22 revolver because their hands are so small. Luckily, MO got rid of the requirement to shoot 70 rounds out of a revolver prior to getting your permit.

Finally, the shotgun home defense idea isn't that great despite what crazy "Uncle Joe" says. The movie industry loves them because of the racking noise (watch how any actor will rack the gun about 8 times during the suspenseful scene......and the pistols always make this metallic clicking noise when drawn or aimed.) In a CQ situation @ 7-10 yrs, you better be pretty accurate with it because the hole you're going to make is only going to be an inch or two in diameter. Plus you're occupying both hands--how are you going to open a door? How are you going to get around corners without exposing the barrel or a shoulder? In disarming drills, shotguns are pretty easy to take away from people since they're long and usually lack a vertical grip in the front or rear. You can outfit them like crazy for CQB, but with the amount of money you're going to spend, just get an AR. Shotguns still have their place, but they're not the awesome home defense option like some sales people like to make them out to be. Lot better options IMHO, but whatever you go with, get training.

Best gun for your wife is the gun she is comfortable enough with to practice frequently and that she can become proficient with.

Don't overlook the .22 mag. Great little caliber available in 45 grain critical defense loadings.

Will it stop a meth head at full tweak? Not likely to shut down their CNS like a larger round will, so shot placement is crucial, but it is a light recoil caliber so easier to shoot accurately and faster to reacquire the target.

An outfitted shotgun is nowhere near the cost of an outfitted AR. Come on man, you're smarter than that. I think I have $400 total in my Winchester Defender.

Don't get me wrong, a LE6920 is high on the wish list. But for home defense, and if I have extra time to get into my big safe, the Defender with 8 3" rounds of 00 buck ready to roll, is going with me. For quick response, it's the XDm 9 out of the Ft Knox box at the bedside.

And IMO, a Judge is hard to beat for an inexperienced or first-time gun owner, wanting a simple point and shoot to handle both home and personal defense needs. I know I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one.

An AR for 7-10 yards.....funny a$$ sh!t man.

I too like 12g for home defense right next to my sig 9. My AR is dialed into 100-200 yds but would work fine as a point and shoot. My 12g Benelli has first 2 rounds birdshot, second two rounds 00. Should separate the gnats from the threats.

@bgebrent, your story reminds me of a recent flight I was on. I had parts of the Sunday paper with me including the insert from a major sporting goods chain. The scent of liberals was thick in my row so I chose to open said insert to the gun section and leave it prominently open on my tray table. After a bit I took the opportunity to read and re-read the gun ads carefully. I had my headphones on but no music playing so I was able to hear conversations around me. I was able to hear hipster dude say to his girl, "look, guns!" She, being the more mature one of the pair, said, "it's ok, they're probably acceptable where he lives." I was flying into the northeastern U.S. so that might explain some of it.

You are right. Plenty of liberals here in the northeast and not enough armed citizens in my humble opinion.

Yeah, that's why you see the special forces guys carrying 870's and 500's......No, they clear buildings with RIFLES. And not MP5's, not KRISS's, not FN P90's, they carry M4's. If you don't have the training, then don't do it or knock it--where did you get that I was suggesting it?? I just said by the time you pimp out a shotgun with all the goodies, you *could* buy an AR. For someone without the tactical rifle or shotgun training a good semi-auto pistol with an illuminator is probably the best bet. That being said.....

A .300BLK with a 9" barrel and suppressor is helluva CQB gun. EOTech even has a CQB reticle on the EXPS2 that has a "T" at the bottom zero'd at 7 yards. Go take a CQB course and see if you tell the instructors an AR is stupid for it after the course.

I would go for any of my G19's with Streamlight TLR's right away in the house. But if I had time or it was more of an invasion scenario and had time I'd grab an AR. I'm in the country.....not worried about neighbors. Penetration is good when you want to shoot through the walls!

Do some reading on the Judge, cool gun but has some serious penetration issues. It got better once companies started producing defensive rounds for it, but there are still much better choices. I carry a Ruger SR 22. It's light, easy to carry, easy and fun to shoot, and ammo is cheap. I think the stories of .22 not stopping people is overstated. 10 rounds can cycle through in seconds. That'll stop 99.9% of folks. At home I have a beautiful S&W 357 stainless revolver w 6 inch barrel. It's big and heavy and makes a sh*t load of noise. But its so cool in a dirty Harry kind of way. Also have a 12 gauge in the closet among others.

A woman in my neighborhood shot an intruder 2 years ago. She was home w her kids when he kicked in the door. She shot him 8 times with a .22. He was high on meth at the time and it was plenty to stop him. It can happen anywhere.

For concealed carry I have a S&W M&P 9MM with Winchester JHP rounds. Home defense - hands down the best weapon is our German Shepherd. Just a pup now, but hoping to train her to become like the one I had when we got married. NO ONE entered our home until we told her they were OK.
We're way out in the sticks in Ky. I wasn't home when 2 guys stopped by wanting to use our phone to call about a stolen vehicle. She wouldn't let them in. Even after my wife said she fastened the dog in the bedroom, they wouldn't enter the house, wanted her to hand the phone outside. She was 100 pounds of pure fury when she was agitated. Another time my wife heard her raising cain on the front porch. She had our Pastor, who had come to see us, scared sh!tless, he wouldn't move. Felt a little bad about that (he had married us.) But she was doing her job. As soon as we told her someone was OK, she was fine. Great with kids and loved to play, but was protective as H$LL when it came to us and the house. Even more so about my farm pickup. I could have left it in the middle of Harlem with the keys and $10,000 cash on the dash. Would have had to kill her to get in it.
Sure wish we had had her a few weeks ago when some dope heads broke in and stole our TV. Would have got a lot more but I pulled into the farm and scared them away. I didn't even know we had been robbed until the dumba$$es wrecked 1/4 mile from the house. Busted the TV. I have no time for a thief. One taken away in ambulance, other by helicopter. Nothing wrong with either, just out of their minds on drugs/alcohol. Better stop here or I might say some things best left unsaid.
