BBQ Drumsricks and Cowboy Lump Question

Cooked up some Drums tonight and 20 minutes before they were done started basting with BBQ sauce. Every time I'd open the dome it looked like someone put a sparkler under the fire grate, is that normal with Cowboy Lump?
