Aside from the obvious safety factors does closing the screen have any affect on temperature control?

    And the above is what you get with the BGE-many answers.
    My unscientific answer is yes as it does restrict the area for the intake air-flow.  Is it measurable and an issue, not that I care about but if the air holes become clogged you will have to open further for the equivalent air flow.  YMMV-

    Absolutely does.  The screen is restricting airflow by the width of all the screen hatching itself.  That fact alone means it effects temperature because it effects airflow.  It may not look like a lot of volume loss but the sum of all the hatching is larger than you may think.

    P.S.  I'm not going to calculate it, but someone may...

    I think I read somewhere, or my neighbor's best friend's brother-in-law told him, that closing the screen door reduces air flow by about 30%.

    Thanks to everyone so far.  I acquired my large without the screen. Logic tells me a closed screen should have some affect. The question is.... How much?  My next cook will be my 2nd attempt at a Boston Butt. This round I'm going to attempt temp control via the Daisey wheel. I'll keep the vent door wide open.

    On a practical level, how much doesn't matter.  In fact it doesn't really matter if it does or doesn't if you're adjusting to dial in the right temp.  Every fire seems to be different and adjusting is inexact at best in my hands.  But the guy that sold it to me said it was 50%ish and he looked like he knew stuff.

    First thing firefighters will do once in a home is to open or break windows and remove or break out screens.  Screens cause significant Airflow restriction and the need max ventilation.

    In the great scheme of things I'm sure that it does...just logic alone says so...BUT I will continue to use them for sake of spark control. I have no problem reaching nuke temperatures on any of my eggs and even if I could squeak out another 5 or 10 degrees MAYBE I say so what?

    All kidding aside, I'm thinking (could be wrong) that leaving the vent wide open and controlling via the daisy wheel will be difficult for a low and slow cook. For temps in the 250* range, I've got both the bottom vent and the DW barely cracked.

    It affects air flow for sure, especially if you have additional air flow issues with blocked grate holes etc...  Albeit minimally.

    I don't have a screen on my XL it still works just fine. Temperature adjustments are a lot more small movements and wind can be an issue. But I have lived with it without worrying about it for a couple years now.

    That's cool! Those others of us who MAY have a fire hazard possibility have a different opinion. OK? BTW did you just not install your screen, bought your XL used or just have your XL in a fireproof area? To me the screen is a no brainer!

    I would argue the egg is attended more when it's running hot for grilling or pizzas, or whatever hot, when the bottom vent is significantly opened.  Low and slows, where it is left alone for periods of time, it's barely cracked and the fire in the egg is small and sparks are much less infrequent.  At least in my experience.  Alcohol can change all that.

    once the temps stabilize for low to mid temps its not affecting anything. it would not work for 1200 degree pizzas though where you need larger amounts of airflow =) theres only one idiot that does that here though. my screen isnt holding up anyways. it does however slow down startup

    In my opinion, you will be fighting a losing battle trying to control the temp with just the daisy wheel.  You're better off using a combo of the 2 or even just the bottom door without a daisy wheel. I have read posts from some of the more seasoned veterans saying they cook without the daisy wheel at all.  For 250 I usually leave only a crack open on the bottom vent and the petals fully open on top. Also, BB is a very forgiving cook so you can let the egg settle in anywhere between 250-275 and everything will go nicely.
