Is Cowboy brand any good? It's cheap but usually there is a reason for that.

You will find your answer on here being No!

That is what I remembered. $14.99 for a 20lb bag at Ace. You get what you pay for.clifkincaid said:You will find your answer on here being No!Elkhorn, NE

Good to use in a pinch but too many smaller pieces.

@ElkhornHusker go with Royal Oak at wally world for your everyday charcoal, then when you need something milder order from ACE if you can get RockwoodI raise my kids, cook and golf. When work gets in the way I'm pissed, I'm pissed off 48 weeks a year.Inbetween Iowa and Colorado, not close to anything remotely entertaining outside of football season.

It's been a few years, but it was horrible. I couldn't even eat my food and had buyers remorse for buying my egg. If your looking for a cheap lump that is available in most places, try Royal Oak.Personally I really like Rockwood and you'll find that most on the forum have great things to say about it. FireCraft sells it and if you spend a $100.00 they'll ship it free.

You know, a lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-you's. And, uh, lotta strands to keep in my head, man. Lotta strands in old Duder's head. it's perfectly fine. grill long enough and you will have a crappy bag of any brand once in a while.
last two bags i bought were cowboy, out of convenience (store is closer), and it was no different from royal oak, in terms of quality.
ignore any warnings that it is scrap lumber or junk. it's not. you will often see s4s lumber scraps in it, flooring profiles (t&g), but it is all new trimmed scrap, not demolition debris. you won't see nails or anything. they source a lot of their wood from lumber manufacturers, all hardwood.

Too much hickory i find. Really sparky too. It's even worse than RO.
-
I used to use it many years ago but I only used it with my hibachis. It might be a little too smokey for an enclosed cooker like a kamado (especially if doing a low and slow).
It was a bit sparky/popping but that was never that big a deal to me.
Buy a bag. Try it. If you don't like it move on to something else. If you do like it (or at least find it acceptable) it doesn't matter what others think of it.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk -
Charcoal is charcoal. Ups and downs
planting a flag for one brand over another is either fan-boy-ism, or putting way too much stock in the most recent bag. Ford vs chevy
there's literally never been a manufacturer that hasn't been alternately praised and reviled
weekend warrior was praised for being dense and long burning. And then some clown would complain it too too long to get going. Both were saying that it was very dense. Etc

I have ruined a couple of meals with it. I would recommend using for hot fires and give it plenty of time to burn off the VOCs.XL BGE; Medium BGE; L BGE

@DMW ... Oh poppycock ... my first car was a Chevy and I've never bought another one after that. Darn thing never seemed to be clear of the VOCs ...DMW said:

When I fvck up a cook, I just blame the lump if it's pedestrian. If it's celebrity lump, maybe it's on me. Right?
I'm going to agree with stike on this. It's mostly in people's heads.
