I noticed his sauce showing up again in grocery stores as well as the flag no longer flying at his restaurants. Whoever took over trying to keep up with current times after Maurice died. I guess the sauce business has picked up again then. Been years since I have been. Might swing by Piggy Park just for a taste.Eggcelsior said:In regards to all the Bessingers, Maurice's is a little on the sweet side, Melvin's is on the smoky side, Robert's is a little bland and Thomas' is a perfect combo of tang, spice, smoke, and sweetness.
The Bessingers are BBQ royalty. The story of them coming up is fascinating, how Melvin stormed Normandy, came home and took over from Joe(dad) pissing Maurice off. Maurice left, went to Korea, and came home and started Piggy Park. He then established the largest BBQ sauce business in the country before it fell apart due to his views. During this time he alienated the other brothers due to his abject racism. There are some nice articles in The State, Charleston City Paper, and NY Times about their collective history.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

We've always bought Shealy's, up until a few years ago it was the only mustard based sauce the local IGA carried. Now you can probably find some made in New York City! From Wiki:Jstroke said:I Have to ask but I am not sure I want the answer. What exactly is Hot Garbage
A Garbage Plate is a combination of two selections of cheeseburger, hamburger, red hots, white hots, Italian sausage, chicken tender, fish(haddock), fried ham, grilled cheese, or eggs; and two sides of either home fries, French fries, baked beans, or macaroni salad. On top of that are the options of mustard and onions, and Nick's proprietary hot sauce, a sauce with spices and slowly simmered ground beef. The dish is served with Italian bread and butter on the side.[2][3] Health.com named the Garbage Plate the fattiest food in the state of New York.[4]

It sounds like it could be excellent. It also sounds like the wrong choices might create a nightmare.Columbus, Ohio--A Gasser filled with Matchlight and an Ugly Drum.
