100% O2 basically gets you a little high. You joke about that, but there was a few places I've seen that are "Oxygen Bars" or something like that. There was one in STL for a while and I remember seeing one in the Venetian in Las Vegas. They charge you big bucks to come in and sniff their scented O2.
I've always heard that the casinos pump oxygen into the ducts on the gaming floor to "increase the experience".
All I've ever experienced is how much O2 levels effect your night vision and alertness. Flying out over the dark forests in the middle of the night, if you got a little sleeply or needed to see something, take a hit of the medical O2 and all the lights & stars in the distance would get brighter.
Your drive to breathe is based off of your CO2 level, unless you have COPD(then it's your O2 level). Giving 100% O2 via NRB to a COPD patient is the one way to give someone "toxicity" as they will stop breathing because their SPO2 will stay near 100% while their CO2 levels go sky high and they go into respiratory failure. -

I'm the label reading stickler. Wilma, not so much. Occasionally she will get a migraine and I'll ask what she ate. If the box or whatever is in the trash, I'll look at the ingredients. Most of the time it has MSG. You may not believe its harmful, but I know better. This is getting boring.HeavyG said:DMW said:

We read labels because that crap is everywhere. You'll find it on labels as msg, monosodium glutamate or most often cleverly disguised as "natural flavors".
To say it's harmless is false. You are either telling a lie or don't know what you're talking about.
Studies of MSG have been pretty interesting over the years. Huge nocebo/placebo effects involved there.
There may well be a very small percentage of folks that exhibit some sort of intolerance to MSG just like with gluten. However, with gluten there are reliable, proven studies that show that those with Celiac Disease can be harmed by gluten. To date, there have been no studies that have clearly demonstrated any reliable, harmful physical impacts with MSG. Maybe there will be in the future - who knows.
It's really hard to break these sort if issues down into real vs. imagined impacts. Mass hysteria is a very real thing. I blame Dr. Oz.

There is salt, sugar, etc in everything too........but if something has a ton of salt, sugar, or whatever ADDED to it, it's going to mess with my system.
So if there's the natural amount of MSG in everything my body is probably fine with it. But when a restaurant ADDS it to the food in a large quantity, then I probably react. Just like if I eat something that has a ton of salt, then I get thirsty and have to make more restroom trips.

For me, its more a matter of honesty. Supposing that what I've read is true, after the discovery of glutamates MSG was first added to Japanese military rations so they wouldn't taste like cardboard.
Cooking with glutamates is fine. Probably can't be avoided.
Adding MSG may be a cover. Like the old BBQ maxim. Too much sauce on the 'Q is like a woman w. too much make-up. What's she trying to hide?
Same goes for salt, sugar and fat.Wood bark drenched in all of the above would be sellable.

Yep......that's why I rarely eat out at restaurants and avoid buffets like the plague. Every vegetable, noodle, etc is drenched in butter and salt. They're not fresh or cooked to the right temp, so they cover up their laziness and overcooked food with fat and cheap flavors.
The way a doctor buddy explained MSG is that it kind of fools your brain into thinking something tastes better than it is. It doesn't add flavor, it just makes your body more receptive to it. Then, after you're done eating, those brain cells are still all excited and that's why I can't sleep. Maybe he was dumbing it down too much for me, but that's how I understood it.

More and more these days has MSG. I am super allergic to it and get throbbing headaches about ten minutes after ingesting Monosodium Glutamate. Doritos used to not have it in them and I like millions of others, liked a bag with my sub from Subway.. Well when salt content and fats started becoming an issue for manufacturers, they lowered the salts but replaced it with MSG... Wham! Headaches from hell..
powdered Ranch dressings.. Anything RANCH flavored really.. All Dorito Flavors.. And now most rubs are full of this crap that in large doses will kill a human.
To those of you that don't have an adverse reaction to MSG.. Good for you, but for the many like me it will ruin your afternoon as you cannot believe the discomfort this chemical causes... And now since MSG is starting to get a bad wrap, manufacturers are using two or three component blends that only when combined.. "Naturally" produce MSG... But on the label there is no mention of it!My opinions tend to be unbiased and sometimes spicy..
