Just got back from a few days in DC after the incredible Waldorf eggfest. It was 586 miles and just under 9 hours. The time would have been much shorter except for an accident on I-395 just as we got on in DC. It took us 45 minutes to go the first mile! Geeezz!
We met some of the greatest people you will ever meet and had some incredible "eats' including the unbelievable "Crab Feast". Also, we put a lot of faces together with the known "forum handles". What a great group! More later............

    egret,
John...glad to hear you had a good time and a safe return! Are you going to back at Hiawassee Hardware anytime soon? I bought a prime rib from a store in your neck of the woods.....Bitter Creek meat market near Young Harris....

  • egret, I am glad that you had a safe trip home. It was great meeting you and the wife this weekend.

egret,[p]It sounds like you had a real DC experience . . . sitting on I-395 is not uncommon at all! [p]I missed you at the Eggfest but I'm glad to hear you had a great time. Tell us more about your stay on Capitol Hill and your time in the city . . . those of us who live here tend to see things with narrow vision and your experience would help us guide future visitors through the trials and tribulations of this great city! What did you like most? What did you think wasn't worth the effort? Please, educate us!

    Haggis,
I don't know how I missed you at the fest. Anyway, we arrived Sunday AM and did the diabetes walk on the Mall with Team Sydney (Mad Max, Spawn, family and friends), then parked the car at the hotel, had lunch then walked to the Eastern Market. That wasn't worth the effort. Spent the rest of the day wandering around, taking photos, etc. Monday it was raining on and off so we did the Capital Bldg. tour, the Botanical Garden, the American Indian Museum, and the Air & Space Museum. Then, that evening Max picked us up and gave us a splendid tour of the Memorials (Jefferson, Lincoln, Vietnam, WW2, Iwo Jima). The last day we walked to Union Station and took the Old Town Trolley and saw the Natural History Museum, Lincoln Memorial (in daylight), the White House and Arlington Nat'l Cemetary. We found a neat little restaurant near the hotel (Sonoma's) that had wonderful food.
We were struck by how clean Capital Hill is, and by the considerable police persence and barricades around all the buildings, monuments, etc.
I wouldn't say any one thing was not worth seeing. Joan liked the Botanical Garden more than I did since she loves that sort of thing. The Smithsonian Museums are stunning. The Capital Building was my favorite for photo taking. What a beautiful thing it is!
    Our trip there was delightful.......

    WooDoggies,
Thank you for that! We had a great time and really enjoyed meeting you in person. I'm going to try pulled pork next time in the chile recipe. Also, I used hickory for smoke. Here is the recipe :[p]Cow Lickin’ Chile[p]Ingredients :[p]olive oil
    1.5 lb. ground chuck
1 lb. Italian sausage (casing removed)
    2 cups onion (chopped)
1 green bell pepper (seeded and chopped)
2 jalapenos (seeded and chopped fine)
    1 Tbs. garlic (minced)
1 (28 oz.) can diced tomatoes and liquid
1 (15 oz.) can diced tomatoes and liquid
    1 can Rotel
2 cans (15 oz. each) pinto, dark kidney, or black beans (drained)
    3 Tbs. chili powder
    1 Tbs. Ancho chile powder
    1.5 Tbs. ground cumin
    1 tsp. cocoa powder
    1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
    2 bay leaves
    1 tsp. tabasco sauce
    1 tsp. dried oregano
3 Tbs. DP Cow Lick Steak Rub
    2 cups beef broth
    1 cup dry red wine
2-3 dried chili peppers (chipotle, ancho, etc.) to float on top
salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
wood chunks [p]Preparation:[p]Preheat your Egg to 350° with inverted plate setter (legs up).
Place dutch oven in the egg on the plate setter and add 2 Tbs. olive oil.
When oil is heated add the ground chuck and sausage (break up into smaller pieces with a wooden spoon).
Add 2 or 3 fist-sized chunks of wood to coals.
Close lid and cook for about 1 hour, stirring every 10-15 minutes.
Remove dutch oven from egg, remove meat and drain on paper towels.
Wipe dutch oven dry with paper towels.
Return dutch oven to egg, add olive oil and saute onions, green pepper, and jalapenos until limp. Add garlic and continue cooking for 2-3 minutes.
Add remaining ingredients and cook, uncovered, for about 2 hours (add water as needed to prevent drying).
(This final cooking stage could be done on the range top if you choose).
Remove bay leaves, dried chiles and serve.
