Smokeware cap question...

I'm thinking about buying a Smokeware cap. Do I have to have the Flat Cap, also, to put out the fire when I shut it down?

  • Nope. Have two, no flat cap.

Do you just close the Smokeware cap and that's it?

  • Yes. And the more you use it, the tighter it gets.

Jason. I keep mine clean like new. And it's fine. Maybe I'm missing something. ???

@NPHuskerFL ... missing something? ... could that be cooking?

I agree with @theyolksonyou. A bit of " gunk" builds up around the collar opening and creates a real tight seal when extinguishing the coals. I only see the small amount of gunk when the vent is opened. Others may have a different experience, so be it. I find this is the same for primo daisy wheels. They don't have a removable DFMT. The gunk helps seal off the air.

 Funny @Jeepster47 I was saying I hear people frequently say they have better luck once the SW is caked up. I've never had issues even when sparkling clean.

@NPHuskerFL ... when my first SW cap was installed, a slight increase in cool down times seemed to come with it.  That's when the idea of the lid came about.  Limited testing with and without the lid showed that it does improve cool down times with my specific cap/egg combination ... similar to how the ceramic cap improved cool down times over ugly daisy.

Just like some ugly daisy caps are tighter than others, some SW caps are tighter than their peers.  You know that that's just the way it is with tolerance distributions.  A little gunk is bound to help close the gap up a little.

  • @NPHuskerFL Blake, Tom and I are on the same page.  My first one was a little loose, although in the grand scheme of things the shut down time was negligible. The second one is v2 and the fit seems better

I'm not sure what you mean by negligible.  I know my experience wasn't what I would call negligible.  Ceramic cap = cool egg in a couple hours, Smokeware still quite warm at >4 hours. YMMV, I know mine does.

@Jeepster47 I still use the ceramic cap when I'm done egging on the Large only because my cover wants to grab the SW lid. I've never done a snuff test with SW vs ceramic cap. But, I understand what you are saying. And can see how the solid snuffer would help. I also agree when these are tooled there are bound to be minor tolerance differences no matter how minute it affects it. No argument there. As you know I really like this product. It's well worth the money.
