Interesting BBC article on American BBQ and some new TJs hot sauce

Interesting article on the evolution of bbq and how popularity is taking it out of the hands of it's origins.

Also, tried some new hot sauce I found at Trader Joes, it's a jalapeno, tomatillo, cilantro sauce, really good.  With the dragon on the bottle and the resemblance to their sriracha, I wasn't sure if I was going to get some kind of asian flavor profile, but not at all, straight up mexican flavor.  Really good too.

BBC needs to stick to writing about bangers and mash. I don't agree with alot in that article .  As a business owner and some who is always asked why I don't have a restaurant or food truck? Why? Because It's a hard living. You can't blame anyone for your success, failures, your notoriety, or even fads. If you can do what you want and still pay your bills, your probably doing better than 90 percent of the people on the planet. I know there are other things in article. but that's what stuck out to me.

OMG I had to stop reading once I got to the line, "Racism, he says. "I didn't want to say it, but it's structured racism."

What's with this new I'm a victim because the whites are doing better than me. Probably has to do more with the way he runs his buisness than anything else.

Don't get me started on the whole "Black Lives Matter" movement that's run by a white guy who thinks he's black movement either. Sorry off topic.

Timing all wrong for this thread...this has classic Friday "off-the-rails" entertainment written all over it.  Who knows...

Funny @lousubcap, you know I really didn't consider that when I posted the link.  I do enjoy threads going off the rails and the random troll-fests that pop up, but that really couldn't have been further from my intent.

I'm actually surprised by the reactions posted.  I really don't want to stir the pot further, despite the apparent huge potential for that, but I do feel the need to explain myself a little.  I thought it was an interesting article.  It has some opinions in it, certainly those raised by people interviewed for the piece.  I didn't read to agree or disagree with the hypothesis, or post to force those opinions down people's throats.  And even after going back to re-read, I can't imagine it being so offensive to me or anyone that I would stop reading one or two paragraphs in, but that's me.  I took it all in context, opinions from people that have different perspectives.  Missed opportunity vs lack of opportunity, often the difference is in the eye of the beholder.

The owner of CK that was interviewed says racism, he doesn't say if his credit is actually good or what he has in terms of assets, so we don't really know, it's an opinion, it's his perspective but its clear in the article the trouble started when his customer base was undermined by the economy, so time for him to partner with someone who has the means?  Sometimes its just bad timing, he wasn't in a position to benefit when the economy turned and the bbq trend started picking up.  Racism or sour-grapes, just different perspectives from this article.

Historically, I think it's an interesting article that makes great points about what the current path to BBQ immortality and fame is now that it's blooming in popularity.  Some of the really old BBQ places that were the early rockstars did this the old fashioned way - they've been around for years, well run, built a local name on quality, etc.  I think this is just saying that the path now is different, eg bbq competition circuit, television, social media, etc.  Either way, it has to be good BBQ, but the path is different most of the time now, the cost of entry is higher.

Sorry if anyone thought this was offensive or trolling, I thought it was interesting to share and didn't think the R-word would derail people so quickly, that was not my intent.

I'm not offended by any means I just can't stand people who blame others. But with technology making everyone and everything more accessible and branding more important.

Probably why you see people getting their name out there anyway they can.

I thought it was also interesting and thanks for posting the link.

Agreed - we have no idea if that gentleman just had lousy credit or not but we do have to keep in mind that this country has a LOOONG history of racist practices when it comes to denying African Americans access to credit. That is just a simple fact. And that problem  is with both private lenders and with federal loan programs.

I also thought one of the articles linked to in the BBC article was interesting - particularly the authors thoughts in items number 4 & 6:

The first article seems to be base their article on one BBQ joint or area to me.  Her in KC some of the best places to go were started by, owned and operated by black family's.  Arthur Bryant's, Gates and Haywards to name a few.  AB's and Gates have many locations in town and sell there sauce everywhere around in town and on line.  Yes, it seems like a lot of BBQ places are getting going and who knows how long they will be here, but I know these places I like to go to will be around for a long time to come, because of tradition and our city loves all kinds of BBQ.

The article above is interesting and one thing they didn't talk about how beef is becoming scarce.  Here is an article I find about it.  It is ridiculous of the cost of beef these days.

One of the links I mentioned from the BBC article did talk about the beef available these days.

Check out points 1-3 in that article: http://firstwefeast.com/eat/dirty-truths-of-bbq/

Is a bit insane but people are buying/paying it.
