I don't know about "dishwasher safe." the Lavatools web site describes it as "splash resistant..."

I've got a couple of the regular Javelins I bought a few months ago. They're nice. Equally as nice as my Thermapens.

I don't have a real need for a backlit model but might have to check one out anyway.

I just did the same thing. What went wrong with your original? Mine, I think has a bad connection/wire...and powers on/off when the pivot is changed at all...and at some angles just won't power on.

Spend the postage and mail it back.
mine was out of warantee but still fixed at no charge.

I dove into my pool with it about a year after I bought it. I don't know if that contributed to it breaking down. It worked until recently it just wouldn't turn on. It was cracked also. I took it apart and all the connections were good. I used the hell out of the first one so I figured after all that and it being 6 years old buying a new one was a good investment. Plus it's peace of mind for my wife. She likes to know food is up to temp.

How does the backlight on the Thermapen work?

The thermapen backlight come on when its too dark. It has an ambient light sensor. It's pretty nice.
