Pit Mitts / BBQ Gloves to remove ceramic plate setter, grids, and food SUGGESTIONS?

nutshellml
Posts: 167
What do you all use for gloves? I have the XL BGE so expect to get in there at times when using my AG close to flame. I've seen great reviews on silicone based, the welders gloves, Grill Beast, etc. What can you use to remove the grid / ceramic plate? Is that something different to actually handle the meat? Any suggestions/links are appreciated. Amazon has 100 types all with great reviews...

Whatever you use, ALWAYS know exactly where you're going with a hot plate setter!---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. I'm not sure what Peggy does different, if anything. But it's the one dish she's kind of made her own.____________________Aurora, Ontario, Canada

BTW, welcome to the forum!
I use a pair of leather grilling gloves and a pair of channel lock pliers. I rarely handle the plate setter when it is not but, when I do, I have a spot about 6" from the egg where I can set it.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. I was using "welding gloves" last week and decided to take the platesetter out to add some wood chips and proceeded to burn my fingerprints off my fingers! Good Times! Lesson learned as well!

I always end up getting grease in the gloves fabric eventually and then they are worthless for heat protection.

I know you are looking for gloves, but if you have to handle a hot plate setter, I recommend "The Claw". I am not affiliated with them, but it is one of my favorite tools.

I bought this off Ebay and love it! Athough you will still need a pair of gloves, this works great for the grate and the plate setter as well. Great quality, all stainless steel.

I'm willing to bet the gloves @tarheelmatt posted have a high percentage of cotton with some kind of fire retardant.
I know many of you have heard my spiel on leather, but here it is again.
I learned a long time ago working in a blacksmith shop that heat and leather don't mix. Welding gloves work great for shielding slag but not so great holding/handling hot things. We always used cotton gloves. Leather gloves were a big no no. Only our welder and grinders used leather gloves. I will say we burned up some gloves, but not our hands. By the time you realize the heat transfer with leather gloves, your burnt. Try using some cheap potholders or oven mitts.
Welding Gloves are for welding.
Yesterday I carried a hot CI pan from egg to house without problems using my cheap pot holders. Could not have been done with welding gloves.

Same goes for the Orca gloves. Some models are thicker and made for higher temps.
TexanOfTheNorth...Always have a plan before you think about moving anything hot taken off the grill.

When I lived in a small Iowa town some years back, I was on the volunteer fire department. We always carried two pair of the brown cotton work gloves and one pair of very large leather gloves in our turn out gear. You put on the cotton gloves first and then the leather over top. As long as the cotton gloves did not get wet you were good to go on handling very hot items. The second pair of cotton gloves was to change into if the first got wet. When the inner gloves were wet you could get steam burns when dealing with very hot items.A poor widows son.

I bought these off Amazon a couple of years ago. Don't recall the price, something under $20 (I think). They are incredible.
Lift off hot plate setter, look around for a place to put it.
Lift out hot AR, no problem. Plus, if they get really grubby, they are washable.

Brother worked in an aluminum recycling plant, hooked me up with four pairs of Kevlar foundry gloves. Two reg, two gauntlet. Buddy is a welder, gives me free SJ Smith welding gloves whenever I need them. Also bought the BGE Pitt Mitt style gloves. Use them all for different tasks. Dexterity is not needed for the really hot ones. Brother also gave me a few pair of gauntlet leather gloves for loading lump or cleaning out charcoal.
Personally, I would not grab a hot platesetter with welder's gloves or Pitt Mitts, and I have the thicker ones.
I can pick up a smokin' hot platesetter with no worries, or a CI skillet thats been in a 550 degree oven or 600 plus degree egg for over an hour, hold it in my hand to season, then place it back into the oven/egg.....don't even feel it.BrandonQuad Cities
