Large Egg Craigslist STEAL

On my way to pick up a large with table and electric lighter and plate setter for $450.  Supposedly only used twice.

I I was gonna "flip it" but I've got a buddy who wants to get into egging so I'll probably just let him have it for what I'm paying.

Hammer down whoop whoop. Better check for cracks

  • How does someone spend $1000, use it twice, and then sell it for less than half the price?! Man... would I love to have money like that to waste.

  • Just picked it up.   They're a second owner.  No cracks but the seal is toast.  Other than that and a little rust she's good to go!

Pm @rrp for a gasket. Trust me when I say you won't do better.
  • Already ordered one on Amazon.

  • The final tally was:
    • Large Egg (daisy wheel and cap included but not pictured here)
    • Table
    • Electric lighter
    • Plate Setter
    • Pizza Stone
    • Grate gripper
    • Ash rake
    • Half bag of Central Market lump
No cracks, and not even very dirty.  The toasted gasket was the only problem.

All for $450 plus 20 minutes of wrestling it onto a trailer in 105 degree heat.   I paid $400 a few weeks ago for my medium!  This is why I check Craigslist twice a day.

Nice find.  I too keep an eye on the Houston Craig's List and happened on a Large Nest that I needed for my recently repaired Large Egg.  I had the Egg in a table before but the warranty replaced it when it developed some serious cracks.  I managed to salvage the old Egg with some PV7 epoxy and now needed a nest for it.

I figured the guy built a table for his Egg and no longer needed the nest,  but when I got there to pick it up, he had an interesting story to tell.

First of all, he's obviously a good cook and enjoys cooking on his grill.  He offered to show me his cooker and it turned out to be a Saffire Grill.  I had never seen one before and was very impressed.  They make other sizes but this one was about the size of a Large Egg.  His was broken by the movers during a recent move to the Houston area.  They replaced it completely.  He gave me the old Daisy Wheel (DFMT) and I was surprised to see that it was made entirely of stainless steel, as were all of the metal parts of the Saffire.

The Daisy Wheel is slightly larger than the BGE version but cleaned up easily and quickly.  I'll make it fit the Egg because it looks really good.  He also gave me the old fire grate (which is much larger and well built, and a stainless device that goes in the bottom of the ash pit to create a space between the hot ashes and the ceramic base.  At least I think that's what he said it does.  Pretty cool anyway.  He also gave me a large solid brass bell that I've already cleaned up and hung in my Chicken Coop Outdoor Kitchen.  Nice sound but very loud, so I'll probably have to put a sock on the clapper or it will wake the dead in the cemetery behind my house.

He said he reads the forums but does not comment or post.  I told him about the Eggfests and he said he actually attended the one in Waldorf.  He even met some of our long time Egghead friends there and recalled them quit quickly.

There's just no telling what you will encounter from a Craig's List sale, but sometimes it can be quite a pleasant experience.  I even invited him and his wife to the upcoming Coop Fest on September 5th.  I hope they come and meet a lot more of us Eggheads.

The seller probably read this forum and saw that everyone always says people are asking for too much money on their used eggs.

@texascurt That does look like a good price on a very new grill. I also got my LBGE on Craigslist for $400 and I still have the same problem as I check craigslist all day, every day hoping to find some more folks willing to give up their egg.

I have bought many used eggs from CL and used to check all the time. In the last couple years I sold all my used eggs and have replaced them with new ones with warranties. I wouldn't buy a used egg unless it was like a large for $200 I might consider it. I plan on having my eggs forever and in just the last 8 years I have had 3 bases crack and who knows how many fire boxes, rings etc. in 20 years you will spend more on replacement parts even if the used egg was free than just buying a new one now.
