Party-Q Update

OK, I believe I have learned something about the Party-Q. First, how long after you light the coals, do you wait until you close the lid? The first time I used the Party-Q, I didn't wait but 2 minutes. Yesterday, I waited a good 5 minutes before I closed the lid. Also, since I lost the alligator clip, I just put the probe through the daisy wheel and lowered it a bit. Set the temp to 350 and wow, she got there, along maching the dome gauge. So, was it the fact that I let the coals get going more before closing the lid or was it the placement of the probe.

I don't have a party-q, but I would think putting a sensor through the daisy wheel would read a higher temp than grid level...Lake Keowee, SC

The dome gauge is calibrated, so when I saw the party-q and it match, I felt good.LBGE, Tobaccoville,NC

Well... You had a hotter fire when you closed the lid. But you also had your probe in different locations.
Where you direct or indirect?
When I'm using my PartyQ I get the temp set about where I want it so the PartyQ doesn't have to work as hard.
Indirect:
Light egg, dome open until a good flame. Close dome till around 350, put PS in, close dome. When it's around 200 and climbimy, I shut the bottom vent about 3/4 way and close the daisy wheel to closed with Vents open. When it gets 225-250 or where I want itThen put PartyQ on and shut the DW to almost closed._______________________________________________XLBGE -
Since the probe clip is missing/lost - use half a lemon, orange or potato to act as the clip. Slide the probe right thru and set it on the grate.I've slow smoked and eaten so much pork, I'm legally recognized as being part swine - Chatsworth Ca.

Indirect. If I didn't have the Q, I would be going by the dome gauge, so in my mind, hanging the probe close to the dome gauge sounds logical.MrCookingNurse said:Well... You had a hotter fire when you closed the lid. But you also had your probe in different locations.

Count me in on losing the alligator clip to my temp probe on my 2nd guru cook. I just use the dome clip and put the probe through there and attach to the grid. Works pretty well.Seattle, WA

What @MrCookingNurse said, indirect or direct. My probe is on the grate...Southlake, TX and Cowhouse Creek - King, TX. 2 Large, 1 Small and a lot of Eggcessories.

Correct, but your question was why was your temp "hotter faster", and it was merely probe placement. There's nothing wrong with some temp but your not measuring grate temp....grillman65 said:
