First cook for First-time Egghead

So excited to become an Egghead!

Because I know there is a learning curve involved before I become an "eggs-xpert" like all of you, I have studied up on lots of tips and techniques and feel that I am ready to make my first attempt. What do you recommend I should try first, keeping in mind that I might not have mastered things yet and I don't want to go too big the first time out and potentially ruin a good piece of meat.

    My first cook was a spatchcock .. this is a inexpensive first cook that is really easy.
    I've slow smoked and eaten so much pork, I'm legally recognized as being part swine - Chatsworth Ca.

    I don't think it was my first cook, but I agree that a spatchcock chicken tends to be wonderful and very easy.  People cook them differently, but I've had great luck indirect and pretty hot (450, maybe), cooking to internal temp, not time (160 for breast, 165 for legs).  Just with olive oil and salt this is very tasty.  The Egg tends to keep chicken moist.

    Some people cook them direct at a lower temp, some raised direct.  I don't know if you have a plate setter ("ConvEggtor," I think they call them, now).  If not, maybe someone will suggest how to cook one direct.

    Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey.  And we all continue to learn around here-"what" is sometimes debatable :).  Regarding first cook-your call but if you have grilled before on another rig then I would do something you are familiar with from the prior days and compare the results.  FWIW-
    Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

    My first was a turkey. I agree poultry is a great first cook. It's inexpensive, doesn't take too long or too short and gives you a chance to get a feel for the egg.
