When to add wood to the lump ??

Newby here- Should I let lump burn clear before adding wood or put wood in when starting the fire?

It varies for me depending on the cook and time. Long smokes I'll bury 3-4 chunks below the top of the lump. Light smokes I'll throw a 1/2" thick by 2" long piece of apple wood on top of the lit lump right before tossing on the food. Different strokes for different folks. Lots of different ways

Put the wood in at the beginning, and place it so it doesn't kindle when you start the fire. Even well seasoned wood will have quite a bit of moisture in it, so might as well let that evaporate while the "bad smoke" burns out if the lump. Saves a few minutes.

A good test to verify good vs bad smoke is hold your hand over daisy wheel and then smell your hand - you will definitely know if the bad stuff is still burning off

+1 all of the above.   Hope you got your answer !!!

I semi-bury chunks before lighting lump, and if using chips, sprinkle chips on top right before placing food on egg.
