Newbie --Ready to buy - Large - [p]But I have a question for the EGG-perts.[p]If I have this ceramic egg hot as a son of a gun - and we have one of our "instant cloud-burst run for the barn" downpours we can get in NC - do I have to worry about the egg?[p]Dave

    Just avoid holding the ash tool straight over your head during a thunderstorm. Reminds me of Caddyshack.

    wyldwood,[p]Thanks - Reason for my question is -- Green Egg folks very clear about NOT using spray bottle for flare-ups. Thought maybe the hot ceramic might crack.[p]If I get hit by lightning -- I'll be cooked - overdone![p]tks - Dave

    A lot of eggers cook in the rain, and for those unfortunates who live where they have real winter, they cook in the snow also.

    Where in NC do you live??? I live in Murphy and the best price I found was at Hiawassee Hardware (Hiwassee, GA)....I got a medium BGE foe $449 there....

  • Dave ,[p]There is a huge temperature difference between the inside (where you would be spraying water) and the outside. The rain will not cause the ceramic to crack. We cook in the rain regularly.

    skiing, ice fishing, snowshoeing, winter camping, skating, schnapps, etc., we unfortunates should get a taxbreak. with out winter to look forward to, i would have a hard time getting thru those lousy 90 degree humid days getting bit by those darn mosquitoes. let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. its been a long time since ive gone winter camping,back then i didnt even bother with a tent, just a nice warm sleeping bag, a tarp, and my ice fishing traps, and some dr mcgillicuddy's. i think i egg more in the winter

    you won't ever have flare ups. that's the thing about the egg i'd forgotten, until i cooked a few weekends ago on a gas grill at a neighbors.[p]evry bit of oxygen going into the egg is feeding the fire.[p]fat (like from ribeyes in this case) doesn't have enough O2 in there to flare. you'll get a flare when you open the lid, but you won't have things like chicken causing flareups, and getting out of control.[p]pretty cool.[p]

    About 3 weeks ago, we had some hail-acious storms roll thru Middle Tennessee. My 2 cars combined for about $11k in hail damage, and my house got just over $10k in damage. [p]My bullet smoker looks like my cars, and has a busted thermo guage. My ancient terra cotta egg also lost its thermo guage, but no other damage. [p]However, my 2 yr old large BGE is unscathed and suffered no damage. :~) [p]I grill in the rain all the time with no problems. :~)[p]Cheers, Adrian

    No worries about the rain. if you don't keep a cover on the egg and do a lot of low and slow cooks, the ceramic will absorb some water.
    You'll see it 'bleed' when you really crank up the heat. This worried me but I was assured that it's normal.
    I still use a cover just to keep the metal parts from being exposed to the elements but when the wind really picks up I'll take the cover off and let the egg get soaked because the cover has blown off a couple time in the past.
