I'm still trying to decide if I want to invest in a controller. Manual mode has been working pretty well over the years, but the overnight cooks are sometimes a pain. Flameboss, Stoker, and the BBQ Gurus all seem like good choices, but then there tons of other options as well. The hard thing for me to grasp is what the actual differences are. Really all these units are, are controllers with PID logic. So whats the difference? The group that did a better job fine tuning their PID loop? I guess the associated software, charts/graphs/adjustable setpoints, and WiFi are really what stand the units apart.
I built a heatermeter, love it. Everything you just said, it does.

@EggMax and @sumoconnell thats awesome. I am not sure where I would start though, might be a little above me. I know nothing about arduino or actual coding, I just do block programming, and by no means an electrical engineer. It looks like it would be a fun little project, and "fairly" straightforward. So did you just buy the kit from heatermeter? Add the RasberryPi for wifi and data processing? I guess what I am missing too is how this thing is programmed? EggMax is the servo like a baby actuator that you attached to your bottom damper? If so thats ridiculous!

I have an Auber, I use it only on overnight cooks. It is basic, i think I got the auber 110? But it gets the job done. I dial my egg in and it keeps it there all night while I rest easy.

So I ordered the parts individually but the guy who spearheaded the project now sells a complete electronics kit.  There are people there that will also sell you a 3D printed case.  Programming is all done and can be down loaded from the github site. RaspberryPi is a pretty cool computer for $35.  The fan and a regular servo are mounted on another 3D printed device called a rotodamper that goes on the Bge vent. Fan runs to get to temp and then no fan and servo does all the control.   I am waiting to see if I can ever afford to buy a full packer brisket again $5.69 lb last weekend.  I have script you can run that will automatically reduce the pit temp by 1 degree with every 2 degrees of meat probe increase.  Not quite sure where the optimum start temp should be on a brisket???  265?   It should adjust to perfection.  I have $250 to 275 invested.  But it was a fun project and I know lots about how it works.  One other note is I haven't soldered in 30 years (and not much back then) but it was easy to put together.
