Homemade Raised Grid

I did a search of raised grid setups for a large, and found lots of good information. But I didnt find anything that told me what size grid to get. Will a 17" be too large? I want to make sure I have enough room to close the lid with no problem.

    It depends how high you raise it. I have a 15" and I can only raise that about 3.5-4" or whatever is on it gets skewered by the dome thermo or rubs the dome.

    Just look at ceramicgrillstore.com. Either buy from them or get an idea of grid sizes from their site. I must say-- might as well cave and buy one. Make a few homemade versions you constantly tweak end up costing as much as buying the real deal IMO.

    Mine raised grid is 18" on my XL. I can go to about 6 to 6-1/2 " above the main grate. I've had briskets and butts on the top with no problems...but a Large would def need to be smaller.

    I have a LBGE and use a 17" weber as a second grid.  It fits just fine at beer-can height above the regular grid sitting on the platesetter.  FWIW-
    Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

    Just remember that, with the curve of the dome, not all that real estate is usable on a 17" grid four inches above the felt line.  Stick the grid into your dome (fire out of course), measure how high it is above the bottom of the dome, and look at how much of the grid is useable.
