Just to pile on here and address the point @jtcBoynton just made - I have two Thermapens and love them! My oldest one is 14 years old and is still running with the original battery. That has to be a testimony of some sort to the simplicity and efficiency of the electronics of the unit. You might ask why I have two - I bought the second one when they offered it as waterproof. I prefer to use my old one though probably 5 times more often than the new waterproof!

    Hello Chad in Pittsburgh,

Some people regret not buying the best, never had a person wish they hadn't bought a Thermapen.  That would be the point I would like to make to you.

Put me in the Yes boat.  I purchased lesser "instant read" thermometers only to watch them take 10 seconds to read the temp.  I like being able to open the lid and get a real read in 2-3 seconds.  It seems trivial but there's a lot of heat escaping in those 10 seconds.  It also gives your fire a lot more oxygen so it will spike/smoke.

I'd try to hold out for a sale or clearance of a certain color.  They'll probably have some special for July 4th.

I think the Thermapen is worth it too. Got tired of over cooking steaks, and worrying if the chicken was done. Thermopop wasn't available when I bought, sounds like a nice, cheaper alternative. I wanted to get the backlit version when they came out, but I've read about people complaining about the back light killing the battery life.

I use whatever 25$ at Sur La Table buys for my grill / meat thermometer.
It reads 211.7 in boiling water and 33 in ice water.     For any temp in between, I'll simply call it as good as it needs to be.

Too many posts to read make sure if you are spending the money get the back lit one. They are on sale for $99 right now and you will never have to use a light to see the temp.
