SmokeWare Cap

The Smokeware cap is not a necessity, but it has several advantages which make it a neat accessory for a number of folks:

    1) Keeps precipitation, both solid and wet, out of the egg during cooks.

    2) Keeps precipitation out of the egg when you're not using it and you want to vent the egg to prevent internal mold from forming.

    3) Is easy to adjust ... turn it one way and the airflow increases, turn it the other way and the airflow decreases.  A much simpler concept than the daisy wheel.

    4) The setting doesn't change when the lid is opened.

    5) Looks like it belongs on the egg ... stainless steel venting on the top of the egg just like the stainless steel on the bottom.

    6) Doesn't need extra attention to prevent rust.  In fact, it can be cleaned in your dishwasher.

    7) Doesn't break if dropped on the concrete.

Concerns: Like the daisy wheel, because of manufacturing tolerances, it's not air tight when shutting down the egg.  Some think the daisy wheel doesn't snuff the fire fast enough, so they use the ceramic cap for a more positive shut down.  Likewise, some think the Smokeware cap doesn't snuff the fire fast enough.  To answer that concern, Matt introduced the "Flat Cap" which replicates the effectiveness of the ceramic cap.

I happen to love my cap.  In fact, for the last egg purchase my dealer gave me a Smokeware cap in exchange for my new-in-the-box daisy wheel.  Worked out good for both of us.
    Ditto..love mine..good investment

I would much rather be able to say I was glad I did than wished I had........

I went pretty cheap with my rain cap and got a 6" house vent cap. It fits pretty snug on top the cast iron daisy wheel. If need be, I move it over to the minimax if I need to.
Yes - there are many styles out there, but the SmokeWare looks "purdy" shall we say. Here is my $8 cheapie bought 15 years ago which sat over my daisey.

and here is my SmokeWare with optional flat cap. See the difference? I think so...

With using the SmokeWare Cap and  Rockwood lump and it's efficiency, I can get 20 L&S cooks out of one loading of lump !!!!
@dldawes1 ... that's cool, but it's too easy to do with an XL ... try doing it with a Large!
Hey bro, I really don't get quite that many out of a load of Rockwood....even with the SW cap !!!!

@RRP Thats a good pic of the smokeware.  It sure looks well made.

Now those roof vent covers... isn't that kinda like welding up a roof rack for your new bentley?

Smokeware cap, flat disc to go with it (seals nice after your done)and Kickash charcoal basket .Got cap and basket couple weeks after getting Egg last year and it's the only way I cook .Had made an improvised cap for my Acorn, before the Egg but nothing works like the Smokeware. No more umbrellas on those rainy days. Must haves if you own an Egg. Of course only my opinion.

That must be a newer smokeware.  Mine doesn't have the angled intake opening in the cap.  That would be a nice feature for more precise control.

Sigh, I will probably have to get a new one now.

The smokeware cap air gap is adjustable.  It maintains your setting when you open your egg. I wish they made one for the mini max. Damn daisy wheel always flops open or closed when opening the egg.
Simply find your temp, then rotate the daisy wheel so that the two screws are perpendicular to the dome handle. When you open and close the dome, the adjustable wheel will hang rather than swing open.

Again, the Smokeware cap is not a necessity, and thus, it's not for everyone.  As others have pointed out, there is an option/work around for each of the seven pluses that I listed earlier.

This morning is a prime example of why I love mine.  Grand kids will be here tonight, so planned to cook a roast like @Mattman3969 has posted.  Meat was thawed and prepped.  Egg was prepped last night.  Weather was forecast for a very slight chance of rain.  Everything was a go this morning with no rain in sight.  Well, this is what it looks like right now:

I don't have a sheltered cooking area, so you'll notice the SW cap, the rain cap on the blower, and the electronics box on the cart.  If I worked around the rain, there would have been very little cooking done this month.

    That would be me!

Too bad you can't see all of the circular designs in the grass.  Bought a large zero-turn mower about six years ago ... that actually makes mowing fun.  I try to have a good pattern for the Google pics.  Son screwed it up the last time and left a simple back-and-forth pattern for the picture taking.
