First Time Temp Too High

Hello all. I am a first time Egger, and just lit it for the first time. We are going to cook some salmon on it, as it doesn't need a high temp. I lit the BGE charcoal, left the top off and the bottom wide open, and let it go for about 7 minutes, with the intention of keeping it around 350 or under. When I came back, it was over 700. That quick. I covered it with the daisy wheel, closed the vent with an opening of about 1/8", and have it down to around 350. Given that you are supposed to cook at low temps the first few times, how bad did I screw up? Everything looks good, no cracks, no smoke leaks, and the gasket looks good to me. Thank you for your time.

First off welcome!!!! Second don't worry about it. You will eventually fry the gasket regardless. You may find that it starts peeling off after another cook or two, or it could hold up for a while. Make sure you know to "burp" the egg, especially when opening it after coming down from such high temps. I'm sure the salmon will be great!!!I raise my kids, cook and golf. When work gets in the way I'm pissed, I'm pissed off 48 weeks a year.Inbetween Iowa and Colorado, not close to anything remotely entertaining outside of football season.

It will be fine. The recommendations for below 350 is only to help set the gasket. For no longer than you were @ 700 you have no worries.-----------------------------------------analyze adapt overcome2008 -Large BGE. 2013- Small BGE and 2015 - Mini. Henderson, Ky.

Its a work horse i would almost say go ahead and order a new gasket from rrp before you set that gasket anyway. I try not to go above 500 even for a clean burn always seems like i hear people getting cravks from multiple clean burns at nuke temps.

@CaptMike same thing happend to me but dialed it down like you did and still have original gasket. welcome and lets see some salmon

No worries on the gasket. I'm on yr #6 with the BGE high heat gasket on my large and 2 1/2yrs on the small. I personally think if your dome fits your base well your gasket will last longer because you don't have heat escaping through any gaps which will roast your gasket.-----------------------------------------analyze adapt overcome2008 -Large BGE. 2013- Small BGE and 2015 - Mini. Initially I thought I was going to crack the porcelain, but looked over the EGG info, and saw that it was a gasket issue. The salmon will be put off until tomorrow... hot dogs and potatoes tonight, just to let it run for a while. If you can post pictures, I will post one of the salmon on the planks. I have a Weber gas grill, and a Cookshack smoker. I am eager to see how this does in comparison. Already I am impressed with how this thing holds temperature, and how little the coals seem to be burning. Thank you all for the responses.
