Hey everyone, I had a buddy who is a renovator build me a custom table for the egg, just wanted to get some feedback! Double framed and screwed from the inside out so no hardware is showing. All corners are mitred with faux slate slabs are flush with the top and underneath the egg. 100% cedar. See pictures attached.

Do you have a table nest under the big one? You don't want the egg right on the wood. Even if it's on the stone, I would worry about it. You don't want the table to catch fire.

Yes there is a stone under the egg. I spoke to my dealer about just a stone and he said it is okay.

I have a stone under a table nest and I cracked it doing pizzas. And that was under the nest! Just looking out for you is all. I'd hate to see the stone crack and either the egg fall through or be resting against wood. Definitely get some other opinions though. That's just mine. Maybe just keep an eye as you get to some higher temp cooks and make sure you aren't getting scorching.

Usually right around there. But, it can get away from you. On my second pizza cook I left my grill for 5 min to help the kids with the next pizza. I came back to the grill lapped around the thermo and probably around 1000-1200 degrees. I scorched my table around the rim of my grill and cracked the stone.
Just gotta respect the temp! The air flow is awesome and can run away from you. The biggest drawback of the egg is that it's very hard to cool it off.Pittsburgh, PA - 1 LBGE -
The stone you have looks like a thin flooring tile of some kind. They are not good at protecting from heat transfer. You really need to use an air gap to protect the table. The table nest costs less than $30, a small amount considering your investment in the eggs and such a nice table.Buzilo said:Yes there is a stone under the egg. @Buzilo, without a doubt you want an air gap. There's photos of tables that have burnt through pavers somewhere on the forum. If you don't want to fork out the dough for a table-nest, you can use ceramic feet or some other creative idea. I highly recommend an air gap, even the smallest gap could make a difference.Steven

Naked Whiz has some pretty good posts on wood tables, stones, and potential fire risks. IMO, It is well worth the read. Bottom line even with thick pavers a kettle setting directly on the stone will eventually char and possible burn the wood beneath. Table nest is IMO definitely worth the money.

The manufacturer who I bout my table from suggested either getting a Table Nest or a concrete paver ( which they said costs a lot less). I bought a paver at Home Depot, and it's doing fine.

I hope this works out for you. There are quite a few examples of tables that did just fine for years even, right up until they caught on fire.
