Kick ash basket setup question

I just received my Large KAB in the mail tonight. I cooked a pizza tonight and will install my KAB tomorrow morning. With the KAB HD Model; how do you guys set it up. With or without the BGE  lower charcoal grate? Pros/cons?

It's smaller than I envisioned. I am excited/curious to see how it works. Thank you.

I have the same question on my new XL kick ash basket. With or without the lower charcoal grate.

I have the Version 1 basket with the thinner wires and run the basket in my large without the OEM grate.  Your HD model looks like it was designed with that mode of operation in mind. The pro is that the egg breaths better ... more flow through and the side holes tend not to get blocked as easily.  The con ... can't think of one.

Yep, the sides are not as high as I would have liked to see it.  Just ignore it and fill to the top of the fire bowl for normal two to three hour cooks and to just below the the plate setter for your low-n-slows.  The KAB will disappear for both, but reappear when the cook is over with.

I have noticed that it depends on what temperature you are trying to get to....I did a low & slow with the basket without the grate and had a hard time getting below 285....but did some ribs with the basket and the grate in and was able to get down as low as I wanted....basket without the grate, fast and hot!!!

With the basket in place, you've got to close down the vents much more than you're used to.  Low-n-slow temps are easy if you don't let the fire get away from you and you choke down the vents more than normal.

I just set the KAB on my High-Cue.
Works great!  As stated earlier, just don't let temp get away from you, start closing the vents down in time.

The HD baskets are designed to operate without the iron grate below.
