Want a 2nd egg but which one ?

I've got a large egg and use it probably 4-5 times a week.  Do you any of you have multiple eggs?  If so which ones do you have and why did you make that decision?   I've been thinking about the min/max. Times when I want to do things like just roast garlic, or just make hot dogs, or just cook one sweet potato, or hell even just cooking 2 filets.    I also do tons of reverse searing and like the idea of indirect cooking on one and transferring over to mini for searing at end on cast iron skillet, but honestly not sure that is worth trouble of lighting 2 eggs.

Any input is appreciated!

I see you are new on here, welcome.  Check out @badinfluence, he has at least one of every size and multiple of other's.  The mini max would be great and I would love one, but if you don't need a second grill to do reverse sear.  All you need it a raised grid on top of your original grill.  Put your CI Skillet on the bottom grid and your steak on the raised grid.  When the steak gets to 115, pull it off, take the raised grid off, open the vents all the way and sear in the skillet.  I do this a lot with my XL.

Just picked up a mini max this weekend. Love the large/mini max combo so far. I wanted another one for exactly the same reasons you mentioned. I would recommend it, highly.

Personal preference but I'm in the LBGE and SBGE camp (bought the SBGE before the Mini-Max hit the marketing hype) and am quite happy with that combo.
BTW-welcome aboard and enjoy the journey wherever you land.

For what you just described, a mini. I'd personally go minimax because I'd appreciate the extra space(I already have a mini). I like to take the little guy around with me and the small is a little unwieldy for that based on its shape.
  • Just picked up my mini max after egging 3 to 4 times per week on the large. Nice to use less lump and get up to temp quickly for a couple of steaks, chops or chicken breasts. The other night I had the large full of back ribs and friends came over with some marinated chicken thighs that I wasn't expecting....fired up the MM and away we went. So far I like the Large MM combo too.

Number one question I would ask is how many people do you typically cook for or will you be cooking for soon? (If your avatar is actually you I'm guessing you may have kids now or sooner then later) I'd say MiniMax is a great option for anyone, but if you are cooking for 4 or more on a consistent basis a medium is the most one size fits all cooker besides the large.

I have a Large and use it often. I wanted the minimax when they were first announced, but a local place advertised a mini on Craigslist for $200, so I got that. I still usually use the Large though, although I am trying to use the mini more now. If I didn't have the mini, I am not sure if I would go small or minimax.

Welcome to the forum.  Your post got me wondering about multiple egg owners.  On this forum, I would guess at least 1/3 have two or more eggs.

I sure do like the looks of two larges in a table together...

I had three going Sunday night.  Large, medium and Kamado Joe Jr.  Don't over-think it.

I agree with @blasting on the looks of 2 Lg's in a table, but that would be overkill for what I do. It would also be nice having two eggs the same table because of interchangeable accessories.

Anyway, I'm not a multiple egg owner, but I would go with a MM without a doubt.

I cant say it enough, Medium.  I have XL, L, M, S, Mi.  The mini is disassembled in the shed, been that way since the band broke over a year ago, I don't know if I will ever get the toy egg back out.  The small just sits there, unused because it has high heat issues (some don't, but many do).  For the marginal amount of extra charcoal the medium uses over the small, it is such a better cooker from an airflow and temp control perspective.  I use the medium nearly 100% of the time.  But I thought each egg was the best for a while when I bought them, until I finally purchased the medium, so I guess it is a matter of perspective.

large and a joe jr here. I love the large but it is overkill a lot of the time. I find the Joe jr is fantastic for the 2 of us!

I would go med. for a second egg. As some have said I do have a few eggs and at times I have multiple eggs going at once. A year ago my neibor moved in next door who is a single dad with two boys so I cook for them and us pretty much daily so at least 6 and now his girlfriend land her little girl too so 8 now. And 99% of the time it's a large and med. going plus a Dutch oven going with dessert.

So a lot of it depends on how many you are cooking for. Either way you go good luck!

I have one large and one medium in my set-up.  Price difference between small and med made med an easy addition to the original large.  Med comes in handy for just the two person cooks.

L and M are the perfect combination for the way I cook. That's what I would keep if I had to downsize. M is my favorite for sure.

  • I have a large and a small and a medium vision. I like all three. I dont understand why the small gets such a bad rap. I carry it around without any problems and have no high heat issues at all. For the price difference, I'd lean towards a small over MMax, but thats just me.

I have a large and a mini.  I got the mini because for one I always thought it was cool and wanted one but also because the large was over kill for just cooking for 2.  I considered waiting on the Minimax when I was looking into buying the mini but honestly I wasn't buying either for portability it was just to downsize so I decided not to wait.  I'm happy with that decision as well as I'm looking at demo pricing for an upcoming eggfest and see that the MM at demo pricing is still more than the mini I bought from the same dealer...  The mini has been great, it's our weekly workhorse and the large is usually only getting fired up on the weekends now.

I have a large, mini-sized, and just picked up a KJ Jr.  For me the mini was just a little bit on the small sized, so we got the KJ Jr. which comes in at around the same size as a small/minimax.  I gotta say I am really impressed with the Jr.  I don't think the mini will be getting much use nowadays.

LBGE for a few years now and latched onto a MM when they were first released. That particular combo works great for larger cooks when more space is needed. + the MM's portability has come into play many times for us. It travels well.  For many cooks, even cooking for 3-6 peeps, the MM is perfect.

I have a L/MM combo and love it.  The MM portability is very important to me personally.  If I did not want to be able to grab and go with the MM, I would choose either  a S or M for a second egg.
