Underbite
Begger
Posts: 607
My XL egg has developed an underbite. Lid is off-center to the rear. I've gone thru a bunch of helps and can't seem to figure this out.
Lid is as far forward on the slotted side brackets as it'll go. Orignal setup seemed fine. After a half dozen cooks, I went around and found several loose nuts which I snugged up.
I'm afraid to do much hi-temp 'cause I don't want to bake the seal.
I've seen all the vow-doo about band height but none of that seems to make any difference. I'm temped to try spacers on some of the attachment points to push the lid further forward. I doubt I could take up enough slack that way, though.
Any help? Advice?

Your bands have moved either up or down. If you measure from the top of the top band to the bottom of the bottom band it should be 2" any more or less will cause an overbite or underbite. The installation instructions on the BGE website for an XL they explain how to repair. The website helped me to fix my XL.

Don't give up hope. Get that bottom band up high and level and then top low and level. Use the spacers if you have them. Then get it nice and tight. Check nuts after a cook or two.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

I'll try above advice. I've seen that 2" measure mentioned before.

Please explain. My nuts are fine after 3,000+ cooks. Same with my eggs nuts4Runner said:Check nuts after a cook or two.Columbia, SC --- LBGE 2011 -- MINI BGE 2013 -
Go to a dealer and get the spacers for the XL. The bands do NOT need to be on the ceramics very far. In fact pushing them on too far can cause the issue. Your dealer should have spacers around and directions if needed. The bands must be evenly spaced.

The Xl spacer ensure you have the 2" measurement. If you have spacers fine if not just measure. Refer to the Xl installation instructions and read the section for the bands its very helpful.

Watch the video on the getting started section of the BGE website. You will get a visual. The bands essentially line up with the edge of the ceramics. Not quite, but really close.

Yikes. Going downhill fast.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

I tightened some fasteners after the first 3 or 4 cooks. Yes, a few were simply NOT tightened properly. That MIGHT have been what started this sled downhill.
I'll try moving the bands basically as close together as possible. I DO have the blue spacers, which I insisted on having. At some point, during a seal change, these Would have come in handy.
Corn on the Cob was going 4 for a DOLLAR so I tossed some on with my steaks. Wonderful. The rib eyes were melt-in-mouth and I don't care that they werent' textbook 'Medium' or whatever.
