I went with the egg

About a month ago I posted about choosing between a bge or kj. I went with a large egg. Put it together this past Saturday and I love it. The couple years I spent lurking on this forum really paid off. Assembly... no problem, lighting it.... no problem, setting temps... no problem. I can't thank everyone enough for helping me with all the info I've found here. First 2 cooks went better than I could have hoped. I do have 1 question, I'm planning on getting a cgs lar in the next week or two so I didn't get the plate setter. I'd like to figure out an easy substitute without spending a lot on something that will be obsolete when the LAR arrives. Thank you for any suggestions.

If there were an easy substitute for a plate setter they wouldn't be able to sell plate setters.

You have access to any metal fabrication? You need a plate setter size disc of something that won't melt, and some fire bricks to set the grate on.

I guess 1/4" aluminum would work to 1400f lump temp. Cast iron is harder to find... and MUCH harder to lift in and out. Manhole covers are too big, but a utility supply yard might have a water meter pit cover.

I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for but most people with the AR use a pizza stone for indirect heat instead of the plate setter.  I had a cast iron plate setter and use that with my Woo and I would assume you could probably use it with the AR.  So a plate setter might be a good investment with your AR.

If you're just looking for a simple solution to use while you wait for the AR to come in or on pulling the trigger on the AR a couple fire bricks and a spare grid will give you a raised surface that you can put a pizza stone under giving you indirect.  Just put the pizza stone on the main grid in between the bricks. Probably less than $30 investment and will work for the time being.  You could probably even go super cheap and just buy a stone and ball up some aluminum foil to put the second grid on and have indirect.  Terracotta planter feet work too.  Just need something to get a second grid just over the stone so there's a little bit of a gap to let the smoke/air circulate under and over the grid/meat.

Direct Grilling  till AR arrives?  They are pretty fast  this time of year   just before prime time I bet.  (I got a recent order in GA  in 2-3 business days)

You'll need a second grid... a cheap one from home depot will work.  You will build a platesetter with the firebrick than place the second grid on top of that.

You'll love the AR bheath.    I went with the R&B combo  I love the oval ceramic for ribs  but making my own drip pan from that similarly shaped ring o steel and foil each time is a pita  FWIW.    I may try adding a spyder with a 13" ceramic lower, and use a round drip pan higher. Covering a rigid drip pan with foil will be easier than futzing with that ring of hell  and foil.     AR's are a slippery slope,   I keep wanting to add more toys to it :-)

Good thing you took pictures it will never be that white again.  Are the bolt's stainless steel?  They get pretty pricey when you get up over 3".  Dave's idea with fire bricks is good and cheaper then the plate setter.  Good luck and welcome to the club.

If you can find fire bricks.....  Not easy to find those in Georgia!!!  I found them at Northern Tool.

If you can find a el-cheapo grid and do the firebrick setup, use the cheapo grid in the lower position and the BGE stainless steel one with the meat.

Dang, that thing is VIRGINAL!!!!!  Those white walls.....  That perfect felt gasket....   You've gotta make that thing a Dirty Girl!!!!

Congrats on the egg. I've been very happy with my large.

I used a cheap pizza stone for one rib cook early on, but after reading about them exploding I wouldn't recommend it. There's so much you can cook direct and raised direct that I wouldn't worry about getting a stopgap. Just get a cheap grid and use some bricks and go raised direct until you get the AR.

I know that I am different than most on the forum when it comes to the platesetter. I have platesetters that I use all the time and they work great for me. I use them with the PSWoo and it makes using with the platesetter much more convenient for me and the way I cook. I like to be able to lift the grate, drip pan, and platesetter all out at one time. The Woo is one of my favorite accessories.

I also have the AR with spider and 13" stone, as well as the oval stone and foil ring. I really only use the AR for cooking multiple butts, ribs, and brisket. These occasions only come around once or twice a month at my house, but when they do the AR works fantastic.

It's hard to know what YOU will like for the way that you cook. If I were forced to eliminate something from my accessory collection, the AR would go before my Woo and platesetter. I have some extra grids with bolts that work for tiered cooking too so I could still pull it off in a pinch.

Good choice going for LBGE.  I have LBGE and a KJ classic picked up for too cheap from local Ace last week  Have not done L&S on KJ but after a few regular cooks I would say it is a close second to the egg.  I think ceramics, fit and finish are better on egg.  That is comparing to one that is 7-8 years old I got used.  I would say it's not worth saving a few dollars when you can have the  original.  Also I think most would agree these things seem to be a life changing purchase so why skimp.  Don't know what will do with KJ, cooks good but might sell so can have another green one.

You can also go with a piece of unglazed terra cotta tile as a PS.  Make sure it is thick, thin will not last long on a hot cook. Home Depot sells the 6" versions in the garden center. I found 12" tiles at a local flooring center.  They are super cheap, I think I paid $1 each.  The ones I found were 3/4" thick.

I'm thinking I'll just wait for the lar to get here. I just did a chicken cook with some grilled pineapple and mango.  Turned out great again.

I still don't have a plate setter.  I use an 18" weber grate and an old 13" pizza stone.
and usually have a disposable foil drip pan below my raised grid (5" zinc plated bolts).

That's what I was thinking. I think 2 day is CGS standard.
