Noxious Smell from BGE

I've been using a $20 heat gun from HD to light my fires. Takes less than a minute and you are using air and heat, no gas or chemicals. Just my 2¢...LBGE 2015 - Atlanta

My point about the oil and paper is that it works for me across all my needs. Meaning, also less than a minute, but less than $20 (haven't spent twenty dollars on oil and paper in ten years), no electric cord, and materials always on hand (veg oil or oive oil is a staple, paper napkin or paper towel too).
There's no one best method. Just what is better for you.
I will say that even with a weedburner, it's at least a minute standing over the egg doing nothing. Seems like a short time. But maybe i am hyper. Time yourself sometime. A minute to ninety seconds standing there is a lot longer than just lighting a twist of paper, nestling it in lump, and walking away back to food prep. Minor difference maybe. But i am a charter thespian in the Short Attention-Span Theater.

+1 This happened to me once, too, in 2010. I was a brand new Egg owner and, as I recall, I had happened to purchase the bag from one of the big box stores. And it was made in Mexico (just stating a fact). I had guessed that some of the wood chunks must have been soaked in oil or something. I hadn't owned the Egg long enough to have built up creosote, or whatever, and in fact hadn't even done any low and slow cooks at all. We ended up scouring the insides with water and vinegar and then did a clean burn. In hind sight, maybe the clean burn would have done the trick on its own but being a brand new owner none of this was instinctual for me. I remember it really bummed me out at the time as I was thinking I managed to ruin the Egg. It was kind of a traumatic experience at the time (LOL). But, obviously, I had not ruined the Egg.NCEggSmoker said:I had a bag of lump from a reputable brand that smelled weird all the way through no matter how long I let it burn clean. My wife would complain about the gasoline smell. Could just be that batch was contaminated somehow.
