I need an expert XL Ash Basket user!!

Did you take the existing grate out or leave it in. Also, your thoughts. I emailed Chad and was told it was designed to fit on top of the existing grate. This to me defeats the airflow positive gained by eliminating the grate and one would still need to clean grate filling up with lump.

In general the XL does not have similar breathing issues as the smaller eggs.

The grate is huge and has lots of holes.  I do not have an ash basket for my xl, but just trying to explain why you have no responses yet.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

Maybe biggreencraig can help you. Send him a pm. IMO the xl kick ash basket has a pretty large span to carry the hot coal. It may warp since the metal is not the greatest. This is just a  guess

I don't have one either, but agree with Ozzie_Isaac and would add that if the basket is mesh all the way around and creates a gap against the fire ring, then you should have better airflow/access to where the lump is burning from the sides than you would if the lump were piled against the side of the fire ring.  airflow isn't going to just be volume, but ease of access to the burning lump.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

@Ozzie_IsaacI actually thought I was asking for an actual Kick Ash basket XL user if they set the basket directly on the existing grate or remove the grate. I have an XL and realize it has big holes, but thanks for the input for whatever it was worth.

Hey. I've got one in my XL. Hands down, I would recommend that you keep it in. The weight of the lump, coupled with the high temps, will warp the basket. Trust me, airflow is NOT an issue, even with the grate in. My egg starts up so fast now, I can barely keep up.

  • Sounds good bweekes.... I'm about to purchase one mainly for the clean out ease. But, I'll take your recommendation and keep the grate in.

You did.  I was just trying to be helpful, but it looks like my attempt at helping to spur responses fell on deaf ears ... or in an internet forums world blind eyes.

I wish you luck in your future help seeking endevours.  I will make sure to avoid them.

    Ozzie wins.  Flawless victory.

    Hi,

I have an XL and picked up the kick Ash Basket at the T.O. EggFest a couple of weeks ago (as a Fathers Day gift). I installed it on top of the grate and can't say enough good things about it. I had concerns about airflow but the K.A.B. actually improved the flow because it holds the charcoal away from the side holes in the Egg and keeps the coals fractionally above the holes in the grate. The result has been that I can do several cooks between clean outs and the Egg holds temperature more consistently. Faster start up, better cooks and less clean up, who could ask for more?

I have an XL in St. Croix with the KAB.  Due to the salt spray, etc. I am trying to gradually replace everything I can with SS components.  I have replaced the OEM grate with the SS grate from HiQue and use it in tandem with the KAB.  Works really well.
