By looking at the Eggheads Everywhere map, I see that @MeTed , @Phattony , @shadowcaster , @stevesails , @Bustersdad , and others live there.  I may be moving there to follow a job offer Mrs. 500 just received.  We are still thinking about it.  Any advice to a new Egger in town?

Really big pawn shop down there. My dad grew up in allen park. I would be hard pressed to move there, but I'm in CA.

There are very nice places in the metro Detroit area. But Detroit is not one of them. It is a real bad place. A little north, south, east or west and there are beautiful places to live, but Detroit is a craphole.

I'm reading this article, and am beginning to understand some of the bad and good points about moving there. Mrs. 500 would be working at Wayne State.  As to where we would be living, that is undetermined.  This is the very beginning stage of deciding the pros and cons of leaving Richmond and moving there, so opinions, good or bad, are welcome.  Thanks.

    I

I grew up in the western burbs of metro Detroit.  Plenty of great places outside the city.  Detroit itself is like a bad M&M.  A nice center surrounded by a large coating of crap.

Wayne state is a joke. Please do not let your wife work there.  the campus itself is decent but the surrounding area is a war zone. I drive a truck for a living and deliver in Detroit often. Sometimes to Wayne state, It is not pretty. Unless this is your last option I would stay the hell away from Wayne state. This may sound mean, but you have been warned. Detroit is very dangerous. If you are not used to violent crime you will be shocked at what you see in Detroit.

              I wish you good luck!

If you need a referral to a good real estate agent, give me a shout.  I'm still involved in that industry and we have two offices within a few miles of there.

BTW, my dad went to grad school at Wayne State.....long time ago.

Where do you get this info from? Is it from driving through the city? It is a lot like most other big city.  Sure it has its bad spits but so does chicago, new York, Dallas,  you name it. But, it also has some really great spots. They have been improving downtown tremendously, it doesn't even look like the same area now. There are a lot of great restaurants down there now and shopping centers.  Just because "8 mile is bad" doesn't meaN every part of Detroit is. Oh and downtown is not off 8 mile. If you don't live in the city or go down there and experience the great stuff it now has to offer then please don't bash it. Now I am not saying it's 100% safe and it's the greatest city but it is getting better and better and is turning into a good town.

As for Wayne State, I spent a lot of time down there and never once felt scared or unsafe. My sister got get Maters from there and played Basketball for them and lived there the whole time and never once had a bad experience as far as the city goes.

Just my 2 cents froM someone who knows his town....

Downtown is the nice center that is surrounded by a large amount of crappy coating in my M&M comment.  There's no other way to sugar coat it.  I'm on a roll today!

I grew at 8 mile and beech road. I live in Wayne county now, so what Detroit does every day affects me every day and I do not like it. Detroit used to be a world class city, but it is not anymore. It is dangerous in a lot of places. Yes there are tiny areas that are nice. Wayne state was once a great university but that was 50 years ago. Detroit is trying to come back but I do not think it will last. I am just saying that If I had any other option I would not move to Detroit, because most of it is very dangerous.

I am no expert on Detroit but I like going to the Mexican Village and Greek Town before the casinos came.  We live a little over two hours away but it's been a few years since I had gone.  We took the grand kids to the zoo and the Henry Ford Museum and both were fun.  Once on the way to the Auto Show we took Van Dyke to Jefferson because the highway was stop and go, it was the spookiest ride I had ever taken.

The zoo and Henry Ford Museum are not in Detroit, they are many many miles from Wayne state and they are very nice places to visit. Where they hold the auto show is one of the tiny areas that in Detroit that is nice. But it is still very dangerous.

I hate travelers to Detroit but Shelby Township, Troy, Canton doesn't seem too bad compared to Detroit itself. Every town has its crap holes...Tennessee has Memphis.

@henapple, Shelby, Troy and Canton are nice. I am happy you like. I live just south of canton and love it, even if it is in the same county as Detroit.

My Mom lives in Canton now.  Nice area.  Did the OP say the job offer was at Wayne State?  There are plenty of rougher areas than where Wayne State is, but I'm not in any hurry to go to Wayne State either.  I took my frail Mom to the Detroit Institute of Arts (same area as Wayne State) a couple of years ago and in the daylight I thought it was ok.

The way I understand it is that Wayne state is where you go if no where else will accept you. Maybe not 50 years ago, but now, yes. I am sure there are exceptions.

I live in a very pretty area with plenty of small lakes, about an hour north west of Detroit.  If you don't mind the commute, it's a nice place to live. Wayne state itself will be safe, you just won't want to hang out downtown that much.  That said, Greek town is cool and pretty safe.  Hamtramk has great polish food, eastern market has charm. Novi has great shopping. Royal oak is a cool area. Birmingham is nice.  You didn't mention what type of work you might be looking for? The job market is booming here, especially tech jobs, and auto.  I'm from Toronto originally, and kind of miss the cosmopolitan culture,  but all in all, Michigan is not bad.  Of course the winter sucks right now but it's not as bad as the east coast.  Be your own judge. Your not going to live in Detroit, try canton, Plymouth, Troy, royal oak.

I grew up a couple hours from Detroit and we went there often as a kid.  I went there two years ago and it was the scariest place I have ever been.  They could not pay me enough to live in that city.  If you have options please explore them.

+1.  I grew up in Plymouth and my Dad worked in Downtown Detroit.  Not a bad commute.
