I always stir the lump before re-lighting.

yeah
just stir it to shake the ash free.[p]when you shut down, the fire will snuff and you'll be able to reuse what's left.[p]i always toss new lump in too, just to keep the level up. i guess i don't have to, but in theory, my amount of lump is consistent, so maybe my egg's performance is too.

Regardless of what I intend to cook, I always fill the fire box to the top.[p]When I cease cooking, I place a piece of foil over the flu & set the cap on it. I learned this from the wire.[p]I always stir the lump to remove the burned & small pieces befoe adding more lump & firing it.[p]

i started doing something from the first cook that has turned out to help make the rain cap good and tight. well, its seal, anyway.[p]i spun the rain cap the first time i shut down. dunno why, made a cool sound maybe. but i've done it ever since. the half-a**ed rationale being that spinning it would even out any bumps over time. but what it does more of is even's out the smokey goop. basically, the thing has sorta formed a self-sealing gasket of smokey/fat deposit.[p]when i put the rain cap on, and the dome is shut, the flame while sometimes FOOOMP! out the lower vent in a desperate last gasp for oxygen as it dies.[p]no foil or nuthin. just a little time and residue
