Dome Thermometer,,, How Long?

I just got a MiniMax to add to my collection of eggs. I have a large, small, mini, and now the MiniMax. I got it to do low n slows. With the plate setter in along with the grid, when I put a small Boston Butt on, the thermometer hits the meat. So, I put a spacer on the outside, raising the thermometer up about 1.5 inches. I wonder how much of the stem on the thermometer must be exposed inside the egg in order to get an accurate temp reading? This has never been a problem on the small or the large as there has been plenty of clearance. Thanks all! - Jimbo

I think you just need to have the tip in :-\"
I've done this using a wine bottle cork on larger cuts to gain clearance.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL -
@NPHuskerFl Hmmm….my first inclination was to comment on your first sentence, then on further inspection I realize this entire post is worthy of acclaim. I use to use wine corks on the outside but when I had to replace one, I noticed on the Tel-Tru site, they say the stem needed to be in at least 1 1/2 in or to the mark on the stem. There is a difference in the readings Is a bimetal thermometer tip sensitive? Yes. For the most accurate temperature reading the stem must be immersed into the medium at least 2-3". Unique to all Tel-Tru bimetal thermometers is a groove on the stem that equals the minimum immersion depth so you won't have to measure.Arlington, TX 1 large, 1 medium, 1 Mini Max, and a 22" Blackstone

@Proser ... great find ... great information ... thanks for sharing.
That means that the dome thermometer should be inserted as far as practical to get the "sensitive" part of the probe away from the ceramic. The ceramic temp is slow to change, so mid-cook corrections with the groove close to the ceramic, would be extra slow to register. Damn ... lost another reason to pop a cork on a wine bottle.
