New Year's Day on the ice with my son.

Went ice fishing with my son yesterday and today. Yesterday we drove about 1.5 hours to try our hand at walleye and northern pike. Slow day and only a few northern's caught on the lake by a few people. Not us. Today we decided to stay close. We buzzed up the mountain to a small reservoir to catch a few trout. Caught about ten and kept three for dinner. Big fish are occasionally caught in the reservoir, but most are pan sized. At one point we were the only people on the lake. Very memorable day, especially since we had to dig the truck out a few times to get out of there. We ate hot left over pulled pork for lunch. Thermos kept it piping hot. Not the greatest pics and no plate shots. But the fresh fish off the egg was good. Notice the pinkish orange flesh. Taste much better and is firmer than most of the white mushy trout most people eat.

Man, that is so cool. You know I'm not a big fan of cold, but ice fishing with my sons would be a definite exception to that rule. Hell, I rode roller coaster in high thirties and rain this week. Add fresh fish and good golly! Great day stem, great day.

Yeah, kinda. My son loves to fish, but doesn't love fish. He's big into fly fishing and catch and release. My wife loves trout and I'm okay with it. So the hot dogs filled the gaps.

It was a very good way to end the year and a better start to the New Year. I did have to listen to " I told you we should of took my truck. If we would of taken my truck, we wouldn't of got stuck." He drives a Tacoma and I drive a Ram Diesel. I think the getting stuck part made it that much more memorable.

I know what that's like, the big lake about seven miles from the house still has open water. It's the lake we catch the big trout from. We've had a few subzero days recently, but I'm thinking winter is going to bypass us this year.

That is so awesome! What a wonderful memory you're making with your boy.
I have three daughters, no way they would go ice fishing. But for that matter, I don't like the cold either. I can't even stand the temp in the refrigated section at R-Depot.
