Solve these BGE Mysteries of a New (sort of) EggHead...

I have an "old style" XL (small handle, rickety wood slat Nest Shelves) that was willed to me by my best friend:

1. I need to replace the shelves. Ideas on replacement? Replace with less rickety wood slats?  Cutting Boards?  Composites?

2. The Plate Setter.  When placing my Plate Setter atop the fire ring with the legs UP for indirect cooking there is only about 1"-1 1/2" between the Plate Setter and the Cooking Grid.  IS THAT the way it should be on my XL Egg?  It seems logical that the space would be greater to allow even greater air and smoke circulation.  Am I incorrect?  It's okay to tell me that I'm wrong...I'm wrong A LOT.

3. Santa brought me a BBQ Guru DigiQ DX2.  I'm excited.  Should I be or have I had too much Holiday Eggnog?  Pointers on it's setup and use?

Thanks Senior EggHeads...I appreciate your time and most importantly; your experience.

Ken

    1. Whatever you want to use.
    2. That is not correct. It has likely been altered.
    3. No clue, I have never used a temp controller.

Use the search function with "DigiQ" as the search word. There are two threads where several folks helped me with the set up.

You can get replacements for your nest. Another option is table. Another option is a paver stand w side work table. Lots of options here. As for the digi q check out you tube to get you started. It's more a visual thing

  • Hi54putty...thanks for the response.
    It has NOT been altered.
It's a BGE plate setter with a factory BGE fire ring and bowl so unless they put it together incorrectly it is just as they delivered it.
The plate setter seems to have very short legs (IMO) but I assumed that it was as it should be for an XL Egg since that is how it came from the dealer.

Don't get me wrong...I have NO problem with preparing great BBQ on it.
I've been in the Low 'n Slow game for many years working in large part on a wood-fired trailer mounted pit with an offset firebox.

I've attached some pics to perhaps help clarify my questions.

The platesetter for my XL have legs which are much larger x4 than yours.

  • They re-did the dome geometry on the XL several years ago to allow more area inside. The newer unit is less squat and looks more like the rest of the family. I don't think they touched the base so the current band assemblies and shelf units should work fine. I think it is possible to convert to a new dome and fire ring as well.

How tall is your fire ring?  Does it have WIDE notches for your plate setter to rest in?

It was mentioned that it is an older style XL - obviously there was a time when the plate setter legs were only an inch and a half high.

If the table is "rickety", then it is not something I would trust. Take it down to a bare egg, and consider surrounding your egg with some metal outdoor furniture until you have a long term plan for a table or a new nest.

Sorry I can't help with your digiQ. I asked Santa for one, but I suppose I should be happy with the lumps of coal I have instead.

If you're handy, just replace the wooden slats. It appears your plate setter has been altered. There should be 3-4 inches rise in the legs. My LBGE has enough room for a drip pan. You Tube for the DigiQ. Welcome!imageimage

  • As stated before, the plate setter has not been altered.
My suspicion after visiting "The Ceramic Grill Store" website is that I have an old style fire ring with the "dimples" and a new style plate setter that requires a fire ring with "notches." It also looks like two plate setters were previously offered, one with short and another with long legs.
I think I'm going to go away from the BGE setup using a plate setter and cooking grid to the products offered by the CGS (XL Flip-3 Ring, XL Spider, 21.5" cooking grid, 17.5 Ceramic Stone (for indirect heat) and an 18" drip pan.)
This will get me the extra cooking surface I am looking for AND increase the smoke and heat/air flow around the BBQ.

    Thanks for everyone's help!

They did change the height of the fire ring and thus the legs on the PS, guessing @8-10 yrs ago. Are you looking to change something or just curious? If you wanted, you could buy the shorter fire ring and the taller PS, I think. Not necessary IMHO.
  • Maybe invest in a new style lid as well. It'll give you more clearance over your grid.

  • Pgprescott, the only advantage to the correct fire ring and place setter with longer legs is the ability to use a drip pan. Beyond that probably not much to be gained.

You ought to go over and visit Tom at The CGS in Denton and he could walk you through suggested mods.

@texasguppie.  Yes they did change the XL around.  I have an old style one that I bought in '06.  My original platesetter was squatty like yours.  After an accidental drop I bought a new one and the legs are longer.  Now, when I use it with my grate on top, the grate will often get stuck inside the dome.

They make the fireboxes shorter now.  Solution would be to trim the legs down off my firebox or even accidentally break it and get a replacement.  I;m going as is for now, since i don't use the XL as often as others...

I would agree with others who suggest you contact the Ceramic Grill Store.  Their accessories provide much more flexibility than a placesetter.
