Looking for a Cast Iron Skillet

Gentlemen - I have an XL BGE and am very interested in getting a cast iron griddle or skillet that can work on the egg with the dome closed.
Any good recommendations out there? I know Lodges seem to be the leaders in the clubhouse...
Thanks,

Love my Lodge!LBGE (2012), MiniMax (2014), and too many Eggcessories to list. - Sudbury, Ontario

If you have an Academy Sports nearby, they have a good selection of Lodge and what I think is their private label (not sure of quality). Also, estate sales, flea markets, garage sales are great sources for old high quality CI.

Lodge new or Griswold/Wagner on ebay/CL/yardsale/flea market. I have all three and the latter are nicer quality(Machined) but can easily be more expensive due to the fact that there's a finite amount of them left.

Since you have an XL you can do a 12inch lodge skillet with no problem at all. They are about 20 bucks. I can also get one in my large but not much clearance There are 14 and 17 inch pans available too. Check Amazon.Dave - Austin, TX

We use a 12" Lodge to make deep dish pizza in our large egg. Works great, although because of the handle the pan is "off center" so about half way through I rotate the skillet 180 degrees.

FYI-Kamado Joe makes a nice cast iron half moon that fits nicely in the BGEXL.

Thanks for the recommendation, @Terrebandit. It seems that there are at least three of them on Amazon. Is this the one?Terrebandit said:Since you have an XL you can do a 12inch lodge skillet with no problem at all. They are about 20 bucks. I've got a round griddle/grill pan thats the private label you are speaking of. I use it on my large. Its a cheaper version than lodge but I have no complaints about it.theyolksonyou said:If you have an Academy Sports nearby, they have a good selection of Lodge and what I think is their private label (not sure of quality). That's it buddy. That one comes with the silicone handle cover which works well. That a good deal for both.Dave - Austin, TX -
Target sells the Lodge skillets and Dutch ovens. I've been happy with mine.XL BGE; Medium BGE; L BGE

I've got an 8SK too. That one is nicer for the stove top, I think. I make toasted cheese sandwiches on it and they are great. The 10SK provides more room for searing steaks and burgers or a spatch chicken.Dave - Austin, TX

My suggestion is buy old used CI.
Find something with a good smooth finish on the inside, the newer crap is cast asis with no finishing machining process. The good stuff was machined to 63 micron finish or better.

Goodwill or any second hand store is best. They last FOREVER. A fifty year old CI skillet is just as good as a new one.

I thought I would like to take on rejuvenating an old cast iron piece, but most of what I have seen is current generation Lodge that has been neglected. I have found great sources on-line and have a decent collection, all bought new, and I love it all. I have 5, 8, 10, and 12" skillets, 2 qt and 5 qt DO. the 5 qt DO even fits my small egg. No complaints with Lodge here. Anything else you find in this country (except LeCreuset) is from Asia and I would be suspect of the quality.XLBGE, Small BGE, Homebrew and GuitarsRochester, NY

I disagree, a 50 year old skillet is better than a brand new one.HogHeaven said:Goodwill or any second hand store is best. They last FOREVER. A fifty year old CI skillet is just as good as a new one.

@Chelnerul, some of the EggHeads bob the handles on their CI's. I use a 10" without the handle bobbed on my large.Steven

My lodges are plenty good and they are not outrageously expensive.Dave - Austin, TX

I've got a 9 inch and a 10 inch. Both were picked up at garage sales and I have had them for over 40 years. The 9 inch is just marked "9 inch" and the larger one has no markings at all. Indispensable cooking items. Who needs non-stick pans. The problem I have with the modern Lodge skillets is that they have a pebbly surface, whereas mine are smooth. I prefer the smooth finish on the bottom.
